Yes, but her name was released. I'm questioning on what exactly this ban is protecting if her identity is already known?

China regularly arrests western business execs. They famously arrested Crown senior execs from Australia last year (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/13/business/crown-resorts-ch...)

As in it could turn into a cause celebre and run amok due to the politics involved.

Likely the cause celebre might not just be affecting court decisions but cause external effects like other clashes in society so best to keep it quiet to not risk random crises.

Nothing new here! She appears to have violated the US sanctions. Many people have ended up in prison for lesser offenses, some of whom were not even aware of their crime.
