It's called an artistic attempt. A successful one I think. I found his work beautiful and interesting.

4 can also be sorta solved by a lot of 1-3. Outside things you can learn from a CS class there is a lot of stuff out there that is poorly documented where the only good way to do 4 is to run many small experiments to know what constitutes an improvement and what doesn't.

I know this sounds unreasonable, and perhaps it is, but I have a non-trivial amount of bitterness stemming from regret at following articles like this that, in retrospect, did not apply to me.

Then maybe he should have written the book! I know this sounds unreasonable, and perhaps it is, but I have a non-trivial amount of bitterness stemming from regret at following articles like this that, in retrospect, did not apply to me.
Such book would be really cool.
An optimist in me imagines that if a person would read the whole book instead of just the chapter aimed at them specifically, they'd gain a lot of appreciation and sympathy for hardships people in various trades and in various life situations face.
