I am a pollworker in San Francisco, and I can tell you from personal experience with thousands of voters that Ranked-Choice Voting is widely misunderstood. The common refrain is: I only want to vote for this one candidate, and not for anyone else. In a hotly-contested election, they absolutely do not want to vote for the other guy as #2.

An interesting take, thank you. I wonder which would be more complex to explain: That is is easier to just rank the candidates and each "non-primary" vote only counts in a runoff? Or Do "optional" voting, and explain that if their #1 candidate gets eliminated, their voice will no longer count?

Right. So when a human commits an illegal act, such a a misdemeanor visa overstay, that doesn’t make the person ‘an illegal’ anymore than you become ‘an illegal’ because you habitually speed in your car.

Nitpick: unauthorized entry is a misdemeanor, but visa overstay is just a civil offense. This makes the comparison to speeding even more apt, of course.

The Federal Election Commission doesn't. If they setup the task force without those powers, that's also on them.

The only fully correct term, as used in our laws and in numerous Supreme Court rulings, is "illegal alien". Shortening that to "aliens" causes confusion with legal aliens (people legitimately here with a valid visa, etc.) and of course with fictional creatures from space.

Without the power to permit people to exist within an area or not, one can not have any sort of social aid. Several billion people would show up to claim it.

Oregon has had 100% vote by mail for 20 years. I would think that if this was a major problem it would have shown up by now.

I’d have to be sarcastic to say that was an interesting or useful perspective to which I had never been introduced.

I’ll leave this to other people to battle off HN. Best of luck informing yourself about how to not use perjorative terms to slander vast amounts of people.

As far as immigration control, I disagree with your scenario. Since my comment was about people who supposedly abhor regulation, i’d like to make sure to apply the same logic to pollution, financial fraud, lobbying and labor abuse.

I’m not a lawyer, but I’m positive be average person using the term “illegals” to refer to individuals of questionable immigration status understands less about the law than I and certainly less about morality.

Shortening it to “illegals” is weird, though, since it could easily be the shorthand for illegal hunters, illegal employers, illegal polluters, or what have you.

I'm just not sure that I understand the resistance to ANY attempt to require identification to vote. It doesn't have to be tethered to the ballot, and beyond that there could even be mobile id/registration platforms made available.

The documents you present for ID shouldn't be any more than you should present to vote... it's just a shortcut. Voter fraud is a significant issue... in many districts significantly more than the number of people who would be unable to vote because of complications.

Except being undocumented isn't actually a crime, so they're not committing an illegal act.
