Japan has run much bigger deficits relative to GDP for a long time and yet inflation and bond yields are rock-bottom.
But their GDP hasn't been growing much either. They've been fighting deflation (or non-wage inflation) for a long long time. I'm not sure a deflation is good for us.

There are now 5 million visitors a year. So it's not really shocking that more "mainstream" stuff does better these days than it might have done back in the day. I tend to feel like I have no idea whatsoever what will do well here. I sometimes decline to post some article because I think it's not HN worthy, only to see it on the front page later. It's as if startups have slown down and programming novelties have died off, and it's being padded with politically driven articles.

Look at relative debt to GDP ratio rather than absolute numbers.
Also look at the interest paid on the debt, which is also low relative to historical levels

I think they mean the one that is #2 right now about China's hidden debt.
Economics is totally fair game IMO. But if we start seeing articles about, say, midterm elections, that would suck. :)
I think that this approach could be taken too far so that we would end up with a reddit clone, but a step in this direction seems to be in order now.

That economic growth came at a pretty severe cost though. The budget deficit blew out by 17% in 2018 as a result of the tax cuts.
For a long time I couldn't wrap my head around why defecits matter to the US when we print our currency. To be honest I still don't fully understand the hand wringing over a balanced budget and reading more about modern monetary theory is leading me to believe that for a superpower which issues it's own currency the defecit is more of a political issue that a concrete one. On the one hand, you are very correct to point out that the US is not a company or household, and that the US is a superpower that prints currency. Too many people ignore this. Another point, shared with less-sovereign governments, is that the US can impose tariffs and fees and other taxes.
On the other hand, the deficit leads to interest payments on debt. Defaulting crashes the economy, as does going to extremes printing money.
