I think it's the subs moderators that cut off new posts. I think that's something they do quite frequently when something has been identified to a reasonable level.

Yes, this is it. When a post 'blows up' like this and gets linked to from a bunch of outside sources, it creates a big spike in the volume of comments in the moderation queue---i.e., more work for the (unpaid) mod team. If these comments are all tangential to the subreddit's purpose (here, identifying unknown objects), it can be much easier just to lock the thread.

There are companies out there that offer proxies from 'real' US resident IP addresses. Everything is using port 443 now a days. Yes also malware. You would need a host whitelist.

Yeah, I have no idea how it could accomplish what is alleged. Just lots of very bad no good end of world comments. Have none of these people ever used public wifi?

To name a few: - ARP Poisoning - DNS Poisoning - LM Hashes gathering - Packet Sniffing - Packet Interception (and modification)

Besides malicious intends and security disasters. These mini-servers could be used for all kind of cool decentralized "self-hosted" services.

Luminati.io merely uses the Hola extension to power a massive residential IP network. Hardware is so 2000.

If someone would ship this to our office with a note like "attach this to a LAN port" chances are it will get attached. And we're a software house. People tend to pay attention to viruses, etc.. but not physical security.
