I'm stuck on deciding what my primary mail provider will be. I do not mind paying a few bucks a month, would anyone have a suggestion? Regarding drive replacement, I will probably host a nextcloud instance.

FastMail with your own domain. Few bucks a month. No creepy motive for them to mine your data. Reliable service. No bullshit & fast user interface.

No affiliation, just another customer.

I'm quite happy using ProtonMail.

I don't use email _that_ heavily, so I'm on their free plan and that's just fine for me.

This is kind of FUD. I’ve been running my own mail server for over a year now, and my E-mails don’t magically disappear into some blacklist. Do you have to be careful when configuring your server? Yes. Can you get on a blacklist erroneously? Yes. Does not going with a hosted solution mean you cannot participate in E-mail? No way.

I don’t know where this myth comes from that running your own mail infra means your mail will be marked as spam. You’re not the first (or second or third) person to mention it though.

That feels like whitewashing part of the blame that applies to engineers and product developers. We don't get to say "oh it's those pesky money people, how dare they", while drawing a salary from the same pockets.

There are no poor engineers at Google.

That is, ironically, the point people are making: if you make that much money doing something so (arguably) distasteful, you deserve scorn. It's in the "you can't have your cake and eat it too" family.

Not evil, just less intelligent.

In a small company every manager can weight more factors. As it gets bigger and specialization grows a manager must reduce what it considers to focus on more specific tasks.

In a small company, a development manager can weight privacy concerns and use it judgment to change features. In a bigger company the development manager must delivery whatever it reaches him as a request, only the privacy department can make decisions regarding that.

No direct data. But that's the impression I have gotten over the years. I've seen a ton of posts at the frontpage that talk about moving away from Apple for whatever reason, which are always heated debates.
