Dropping chrome is not enough. Switch to bing (Just as good as G), or ddg if you really want. Then ditch android which is the spy in your pocket. Are you against using Safari? It really is great on Mac.

After all that I have some trust issues. Btw. how should I be sure that Chrome wouldn't copy my documents from my drive and send them to Google?

I'm slightly annoyed. I just made the commitment to move back to Linux from Windows 10 last week. I was hoping to at least stick with chromium, now I'm reconsidering that. Now that I think about it, should I really be trusting Android? Is iOS any better? Apple does appear to show some commitment to privacy, but their anti repair stance is crazy. Will I have to switch to custom Android ROM with all the Google services…

I started using an iPhone, partially to get away from google services.

I don’t know for sure if I can trust Apple with my data, but on the balance of probabilities I feel slightly safer with the company that makes its revenue from hardware sales, vs the company that makes its revenue from advertising.

i found that on my machines Chrome 69 is one of the fastest and consumes the least amount of ram of all Chrome releases so far. on mac the difference between firefox and chrome is night and day for both speed and memory consumption, unfortunately. even safari 12 fares better than firefox in this regard.

aer you saying chrome or ff uses less?

Well, I think you’re paying for the better speed in chrome by sacrificing your privacy. Isn’t that how this all works?

You consent to being tracked -> google gets money off of tracking you -> google can pay more engineers to work on chrome and make it faster -> you get more tied into chrome’s performance quirks and ecosystem -> google gets more money by tracking you -> and so on...

If that sounds fair to you, then none of google’s actions should bother you (probably). But for me personally, I switched over to Firefox a long time ago when I noticed that chrome was becoming increasingly user-hostile in design.

Can't speak for ux-app but most people on HN are on macs, also a lot of people on linux.

I assume this is based on a lot of (web/mobile) devs being on HN and them using macOS predominantly based on conferences etc.?

I'd agree with that assessment, macOS probably first, Linux second, but then you have to remember how many Windows users there are. The HN regulars are probably mostly on Mac/Linux, but I'd imagine just the drive by Windows traffic would put it at the top spot.

I Uninstalled Chrome a few days ago, more due to the fact I don't need it. Safari has been my default for a long time, specially due to the fact I can use 1Blocker across the phone, iPad and my Mac. FF's Containers has replaced Chrome's profile features for me. Infact I have gone ahead and made a seperate container for Google and defaulted google domains to it, just like what the FaceBook container does.

I'm sure Microsoft had the same reasoning about IE.

Google strikes off a right balance between annoying and convenient. It's kicking off all Privacy concerned people, Ad Block people, overopiniated people off it's platform indirectly.

Websites get less money from Firefox users per user then Chrome users. If Firefox users make less money, going to future, devs will not optimize for it.

If the only remaining Firefox users block Ads and block analytics, I do not think google or some other search engine will pay to them to keep their default. There is literally no benefit of having such people on your platform.
