Yep. Google Chrome is not a web browser anymore. It is a portal to Google's services. If you want to use a web browser, then use Firefox.

That’s pretty much the reason Google has a browser in the first place. Most normal users don’t really grok the difference between ”browser” and ”Google” anyway.

I doubt that. With the marketshare on Windows it is very likely, that people deliberateley install Chrome. So they know what a browser is, now that they have at least 2 installed.

How can GDPR apply to processes running locally on your machine? At best, you can claim misleading advertising (which, is often handled by the fair trade commission or something similar, and often has to show damages before they can award anything).

They're tampering with the expected operation of the browser so that even after the user explicitly told them not to it still sends personally identifiable tracking information to their servers.

I'm glad the GDPR is in effect, so instead of "this should be illegal" we can say "of course this is blatantly illegal".

I hope they get a fine for this, with multipliers for how deliberate it is, and for keeping on defending the behaviour even after being called out.

Wow, that is pretty shitty. Given the number of times over the years that I've had to wipe all Google cookies and site data to fix issues with offline mode in Google Docs, this does not bode well for being able to use Chrome successfully to access even Google's own services in future.

yes, you can. google cookies are being rewritten until you logout. once out, you can remove the cookies. once you re-login, the cookies come back. basically they've added a step: logout before cookie removal.

Can't speak for ux-app but most people on HN are on macs, also a lot of people on linux.

Right.

But there's a certain amount of irony that people are ditching Chrome, while still using an OS which literally does spy on you.

For example for a long time Firefox didn't have process separation, sandboxing, etc. Basic features. I don't know how it is now
