I fail to see “dedication”. Anyone getting paid minimum wage and working sub hours for a non career job is not going to be highly dedicated to a position. While I’m not against unionizing, I am against the rise of unskilled labor assuming that an employer owes them something. Unionizing isn’t inherently bad, but unions do tend to exploit both the laborer and the employer for the union’s gain. Failed labor unions comb…

I'd need to see evidence of your claims that (1) anyone getting paid minimum wage is not going to be highly dedicated or (2) that anybody working sub hours is not going to be highly dedicated or (3) that service jobs are "non career jobs" or (4) that service jobs are "unskilled" or (5) that there are a class of employees owed nothing by their employers or (6) unions tend to exploit the laborer and the employer or (7) what a "failed" labor union is or (8) unions ultimately hurt workers in the long term.

I am doing what I can to remove my emotional reaction to your comment, which I find to cast a wide and unfounded net, from my response. I apologize if I didn't do a very good job.

And you'd be fired because no one else lives in the world you've created in your head.

I do. I am a Prime member but when Whole Foods cashiers ask I say "no" because I just want to get the bullshit over with and get out of there.

That's not the point; you don't get awards for purposefully and repeatedly violating company policy on a hunch that the customers prefer it.

And you're actually validating Amazon's policy: you're annoyed and yet you're still both a Prime member and a WF client, which means they lost nothing by annoying you.

There are trade bodies, industry bodies, industry associations, chambers of commerce, special interest groups, lobbying groups and it goes on. Every business and corporate is a member of multiple bodies to further their interests and nobody questions these groupings. Yet employee and worker bodies causes discussion and debate as if somehow only this aspect of economic life should not seek to promote and protect their…

Dissonance carefully cultivated by decades of lobbying, and ideological indoctrination of the, “better dead than Red,” variety. Look at how little effort it takes to convince people to go to war, lock up their fellow humans for using drugs, and tell me t wasn’t the easiest thing in world for corporations and their pet politicians to accomplish.

Just make sure that a large enough bloc conflate worker’s rights with the communism and then sit back and cash your checks. If the people get a little stroppy grow in something about race, abortion, or socialism and try not to smile too obviously all the way to the bank. If even thst fails punish the heretics amd reward the faithful, to the point that people desperate to keep their healthcare don’t even think of raising their heads.

All the other interest groups you mention definitely create the questioning and the criticism. They have just been more successful at permeating public perception. Almost always being complicit with the state. Doctors? Lawyers? Lobbying? They all get criticism.

I also dissent with the model of "everybody commits an act against society, why shouldnt anyone engage in the race to capture the spoils". Do not institutionalize robbery!

The going rate for someone that just shows up to most of their shifts isn't minimum wage...

but if you're reminded repeatedly by management and you continue not to, then what would you expect to happen? I’d expect a massive fucking award for not constantly pissing off customers with this nonsense.

And you'd be fired because no one else lives in the world you've created in your head.

And that's part of the problem.

I go to Super Duper in SF, and every time, the employee is forced to ask: "Have you been to Super Duper before?" If I say yes, "Welcome back!" if I say no, "Welcome!"¹. It is pointless. All I want is lunch. Want to see that I've been here before? You have my credit card number…

¹The exact words might not be right, the point is that there is no meaningful difference to the customer between the responses.

I get it. I know that. It’s not the cashier’s fault. It just kinda sucks that a transaction as simple as “buying some food” is now draped in this nonsense.

My concern with this is that this will only accelerate the probability that Amazon Go merges with Whole Foods to have a cashier-free experience. >Shoppers, however, have saved millions as a result of the shake-up. This is why you're going to have a tough time getting sympathy from the public, and why I think (for better or worse) Amazon will win the PR battle. The average person now has access to healthier grocery /…

> The average person now has access to healthier grocery / purchasing options

WF's food is not any healthier than the food you find in other stores.

I have noticed that the cashier's have gotten pushy about asking about a Prime account, and very recently about a charity donation. It's a good way to 'make' people donate when asked upfront. I'm sure the probability of people donating increases. When I denied, I was asked if I'd like to round off my payment and have the balance donated. Honestly, it's very annoying. Whole foods is unfortunately becoming an REI store…

That's the new trend in many grocery stores.

Someone on HN or Reddit mentioned that grocery charities are actually a tactic to estimate the sign of the derivative of e the customer base's grocery-discretionary income, as a hint of when to raise prices.
