Lounge works fine on a smartphone because the actual IRC connection would be handled by a server where you host it, not your own phone.

Do you get notifications when you are mentioned on your phone though?

If your browser supports web push spec, yes!

the fact that companies like HP builds/sells mattermost deployment/support/... yet internally still relies on lync is a joke (and pain to live with)

They use Mattermost internally, they don't sell it to customers (not sure if you were assuming I was talking about HP or a similar company that just deploys Mattermost for customers).

hp, hpe, dxc.. whatever 'division' is one part of .. then it must be deployed in a small amount of centres as most support teams (of any kind) that I've interacted with were all tied to lync only

98% likely that they do.

Yes, I do. Sorry for the abbreviation. We used the LDAP connector that is publicly available in GitLab and then tied Mattermost into GitLab authentication.

It's a real shame that the industry has forsaken the protocol in favor of walled gardens.

The reason is open protocols soon become the single biggest blocker to innovation. Open protocols stagnate and ossify. So some competitor with a proprietary system will come along and eat your lunch. That's why there have only been 2 changes in email clients ever - the move from terminal to desktop GUI and desktop GUI to web 2.0 client. That's why XMPP and IRC clients will never compete with slack (queue the 'what do…

I don't think it's as much that the protocol stagnates as much as it is that companies have a strong incentive to get users into their walled garden. If you use an open protocol, you can't lock people in.

Please don't post unsubstantive comments here.

You have a point, but there's little alternative. I wrote about this recently, if anyone cares: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17494243

I was just making a poor attempt at a joke (which fell flat). I appreciate what you are doing and I thank you for your dedication.

Huge problem for on-prem Hipchat customers. Plenty of customers out there not willing to put all their internal communications on the other side of their firewall, and now have to migrate. Slack doesn't have an on-prem option. Microsoft Teams doesn't have an on-prem option. What are enterprises supposed to use, RocketChat? Matrix? With no clear migration path? Really poor move on Atlassian's part. It would be one thi…

Hi, I am Watcha CEO. Watcha may be an alternative to check: our solution is based on Matrix and thus can be deployed anywhere.

Our added value: UI and specific functions, simple user onboarding, upgrade management...

It is not about the language is it... I don't think there is so big difference between php and python. Besides Slack is most probably using whole lot more tech than php. It is about Zullip being open source.

It's also about the language. See, for example, https://www.quora.com/Why-is-PHP-hated-by-so-many-developers

That is from 2014. There have been many changes in the programming language since.

Most people nowadays are using frameworks and abstraction layers which make most of these points moot.

Email can also create bottlenecks and unneeded silos of information...

Sorry to get triggered but oh my god I dislike those buzzwords. I find those two come up any time attempts are made to delineate responsibilities or make it possible for teams to run in parallel (by saying "you work on this area of speciality, I'll work on that" i.e. "silos").

Ehhh, you kinda mixing problems here.

Wickr Enterprise should be a pretty good option. It's basically a team oriented and somewhat less open source Signal competitor. It can be deployed on-prem.

My team is happy to welcome all HipChat users to the Wickr Pro platform. The good news is that we already have a lot of customers who migrate from Slack and HipChat to Wickr when they need to have security and compliance. Users find that unlike on Slack or elsewhere, that their collaboration flows are end-to-end encrypted so no 3rd party including Wickr has access to your team data.
