Thanks for the article! Just giving some numbers from my experiences here. Since I released "The Road to learn React" book 1 1/2 years ago, I got various feedback on how long it takes people from knowing only JavaScript ES5, HTML and CSS to being employed as a React developer. I heard numbers around 1 - 2 months for being really proficient with React (and partly its ecosystem), but I have heard about success stories where people managed to get through the book (and its project) over one weekend, having the job interview the coming week, and being employed as React developer then. Personally I think this is only possible because React has a slim API and once you have built a project with plain React, you should be able to get the job done. Then Redux et. al can be learned on top during the job.

How fast you'll learn react depends on your level of javascript(as well as ES6 and beyond). It took me all of 10 minutes to get the basics..

...And then subsequently took me several days to get my currentUser state shared with my userIcon component.

The real question should be, how long does it take to learn Redux and react tooling.

This is mostly just a rant about someone's semantic pet peeves, in which they set up and knock down a bunch of straw men in succession.

Nobody thinks you can start from a completely blank slate and learn something comprehensively in five minutes. But if you're already a JavaScript developer who has an environment configured, an editor you like, an understanding of what days looks like in JS, and you know what a function looks like, yeah, I can probably convey the marginal knowledge you need to know the very basics of react in about five minutes.

It'd be wrong for me to act like I could teach you EVERYTHING about react development in that time, and it's equally absurd for the author to claim anyone really believes that.

Man all that complaining is annoying to read.

Someone (s) said something about 5 minutes and the author clearly knows that isn't accurate but then goes on about it.

That should have been the start and end of the story. It is just personal nitpicking and silly pics after that.

I don't know, I guess literally disagreeing with "learn React in 5 minutes" undermines his point, but he does have a point. There are a lot of "non-technical" people out there who want/need (or at least think they want/need) web development to be really easy and really cheap, and when they see "learn React in 5 minutes/learn React in 8 minutes/learn React in an afternoon" and you or I say, "I've been looking at React for a few weeks now and I'm just starting to get the hang of it", they think we're either incompetent or (more likely) lying.

If you take yourself seriously you should look to work under a different boss. Having bosses with such expectations could be dangerous for your wellbeing

I don't feel like he addresses that piont very well if that was the point.

More so it is just a rant about it indirectly and then complains about react as well.

Learn "x" in 5 minutes is pure clickbait which we still click on in the hopes someone explains just one of the dozens or more concepts in 5 minutes or at least in a quick time. I click some of these links while knowing it's pure deception, but it;s not always, it's like a lottery
