Tesla and SpaceX are businesses and I never understood the public fandom behind them and Elon Musk. 3,500+ people losing their jobs is pretty significant for a leader who touts altruism as one of his top motivators.

I'm not a huge Elon fan, but he is pretty unique when it comes to rich people. Most people in his position would invest their money wisely and live off it forever. Instead he put everything he had into several moonshots.

Society could use a couple more people like him.

You are not going to count all the jobs he created in the first place, and the years of gainful employment those 3500 people had? It’s just all negative in your estimation?

What an oversimplification of my comment. I'll oversimplify it for you so you can't misinterpret it: "This decision he just made is poor and Elon is human just like everyone else"

Can you explain why the decision is poor? Because it results in fewer jobs (but still the same number of jobs Tesla had in early 2018)? Is number of jobs the only metric that determines whether a decision is good or bad? If so that would lead to an entire system of economics that is very different from the one economists know. So if you hold the secret to this vast trove of knowledge, you would be doing a disservice to humanity by not sharing your wisdom.

A 9% adjustment isn’t bad against a business that is running as hot as Tesla...

Are they running hot? They're in serious financial trouble and have been unable to meet self-imposed production levels. Now they're laying off thousands of people.

They are not in financial trouble. Most people are only skeptical if they can do it without raising capital.

However everybody agrees that they both have many costumers waiting and would be able to raise capital.

Nobody believes that Tesla is in real real serious troupe.

Can you imagine pay, promotion, and assignment by seniority instead of skill? Doesn't sound very appealing to me.

I don't know where you get that idea from its not my experience working as an M&P grade in a unionised company in the UK.

> I don't know where you get that idea from

Virtually every union in the US

> its not my experience working as an M&P grade in a unionised company in the UK.

Yeah. Tesla isn't based in the UK, nor are the wroker in question here.

Strange statement. Why would a business guy be judged on firing people. Its not like he is running a charity.

I like SpaceX because of what they do, not because they 'provide jobs to the community'.

could be sales and marketing

Considering demand for product is outstripping their ability to produce product, their sales & marketing teams are setting a high standard of work the rest of the company has yet to meet. Feels a little unfair if they were the ones getting axed.

Or maybe they aren't needed at all? Most people I know that want a Tesla have wanted one forever and weren't really coerced into it by sales and marketing.

I'm sure this is at least partly tied-in to their ongoing, illegal efforts to crush labor organizing at their plants. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-nlrb/worker-testifi...

i don't mean to make this political, but if unionization costs jobs, why does the left consider that a victory?

Perhaps jobs are not the end. Perhaps prosperity is the end, and jobs are occasionally the means to it.

If we lost half of all jobs, but a family could be supported comfortably by a single-breadwinner, would you consider that a net loss, or a net gain?

Or, alternatively, if we had 100% employment, yet all lived in poverty, would that be a better world?

Consider that the Soviet Union had 100% employment. Is that the high water mark for economic success? Why not? Inefficiency is one answer to it. Another was 'Where did the wealth surplus go?' There are others.

I gloss over it in another comment. You may be exaggerating with your sarcasm a bit.

> It means that Tesla could let go over 3,000 employees in this round of layoffs. > The CEO also confirmed that Tesla didn’t renew its contract with Home Depot to sell its energy products at their stores. Tesla energy advisors were supposed to be at 800 Home Depots across the US earlier this year. If they had 3.5 employees per store, and a team of 200 managing the entire effort, these layoffs could be attributed enti…

I wasn't even aware they HAD a contract. My local Home Depot has zero mention of any product Tesla makes.

The contract was for 800 Home Depot locations out of ~2,000 total locations. Our location has People watching the entrance of the store as well as combing the aisles to pitch customers.

Valuable products don't need a hard sell.

How many tech workers would like their terms of employment, including compensation, to be decided by negotiations between a union and a company?

I can recommend it. The way it works in civilised countries is that you can still attempt to negotiate your terms, however the union negotiates annual across the board increases, and critically circulates reliable information on what the salary ranges and compensation packages are. Which as you might imagine, makes it much easier to effectively negotiate. They also provide additional insurances for things like glasse…

Yeah because every country with unions is automatically civilized and gets all these things.
