You're presuming that in these fatalities that the driver's eyes weren't on the road. What if the autopilot executed a maneuver that attentive drivers couldn't recover from in time?

People smell better in Europe? When people trot out their arguments against public transportation they always refer to the inefficiencies and completely ignore the human element. No one wants to be crammed in a small space with a bunch of strangers every day.
Possibly not showering is just more socially acceptable in the US or something? I dunno, I see this a lot on these discussions, but it’d be fairly rare that I encounter a notably smelly person on public transport here. Being on a bus/tram/train with strangers never really bothered me, to be honest. When I walk down the street or onto a shop, I’m also surrounded by strangers; what’s the issue?

That's strange. As one of most popular "crash management" systems on the market, one installed on Volvos is quite good at this, to the extend they put it's test video into their commercials. A sponsored article?

Waymo seems to be doing just fine on their own. I'm not sure they feel they need any partnership. They just ordered some 30,000-ish cars, so it would seem they're entering the mass-production phase.
There's active disdain (or at least snide jokes) among the senior Waymo engineers for the approach to autonomous driving taken by Tesla. I can't see a partnership in the cards, probably ever. Source: used to work there

#196No one refuses to use GPS because it's possible to use a map or sextant like humans can. No one refuses to use radar because you might be able to point at a plane with your eyes.
Tesla should invest in improved lidar or imaging radar, rather than hoping they can come up with a neural network to solve all their problems from visual images.

don't mind operating at a loss That's ridiculous, they might base this on some other benifit such as type of owner, but the industry is not just going to subsidize 100,000+ plus people. I am not saying it's fool proof, but your bias is showing.
I mean Tesla doesn't mind operating at a loss, as they are trying to push autopilot to the market. By the way, the black box recorder in a Tesla might also contribute to the discount given by insurers.

#198Inattentive tailgaters shouldn't be accommodated. Sure, their problem becomes your problem when you brake hard, but I'd much rather be rear-ended (with head rests and the whole rear of the car as a crumple zone) than plow head on into a stationary object at high speed.

#200A common situation, certainly on British motorways in relatively heavy traffic, is to be tooling along at 70mph, and then have to come to a halt - or drop to 20mph - fairly abruptly due to waves of slow moving traffic that move backwards along the carriageway. I wonder how well such systems would handle that kind of situation, where obstacles might not be stationary, but the speed difference is large?
It depends on the detector used. Radar in particular is bad for stationary obstacles because it can't separate reflections from the ground from a stationary obstacle. Moving objects are no problem because their radar reflections gets doppler-shifted and can then be separated the ground clutter.
