I never denied that. Your comment pointed out a problem with OTA updates and I agreed calling it "a clear flaw". I pointed out a benefit of OTA updates then asked an open ended question about how they should be handled. You responded be attacking the example I provided. I was looking to debate this serious issue, not getting into a pissing match about it.

I never said you denied it, I said you ignored it. If you wanted to debate this serious issue, then maybe you shouldn't keep ignoring one of the crucial cornerstones of the discussion. If you're unwilling to discuss points that challenge your own opinion, then it's clear that you're just trying to push an agenda rather than have an actual discussion.

It's a hardware limitation. If you have a radar, the only way to get a signal out of it is to ignore all stationary stuff.

That would make sense if the radar is stationary. In this case, the radar system itself is moving... including moving relative to stationary objects. So I don't see how what you say makes sense. Not saying you are wrong. Just saying I don't follow your explanation.

The problem is not whether the object is moving relative to the radar. It is whether the object is moving relative to all of the stationary objects behind it that might confuse the radar.

"Spokesmodels"? Those were SpaceX employees. SpaceX engineers. And at least initially, I don't think they actually knew what happened. Maybe they did later, but not initially.

Can you explain further what "poor angular resolution" means?

It's good at determining whether something is moving towards it or away from it, but bad at determining where that object is; whether it's directly in front or slightly to the left or far to the left. Its "vision" in that sense is blurry.

Makes me wonder about the future of self-driving cars. I would think that the first thing that should be programmed in is to not run into objects that are not moving. IMO, maybe the roads need to be certified for self-driving. Dangerous areas would be properly painted to prevent recognition errors. Tesla claims their cars have all the hardware required for full self-driving, but their cars do not have LIDAR. Every serious self-driving outfit understands LIDAR to be necessary. Tesla's marketing department would have people believe otherwise of course.

Poor angular resolution means you can't tell if an object is at 12 o'clock vs 1 o'clock. It means you can tell there are things, but you don't accurately know what angle they're at.

Or perhaps us fingers-in-ears Musk fans don't expect the AP to be perfect. Especially considering how new the fields are. Autopilot doesn't need to be perfect, just better than humans.

I think the issue is, if you read https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17256900 is that Autopilot is not better than humans.

I did, unimpressive, he doesn't have any relevant data.

My reply to the post though:

Obviously someone shaping stats to their own biases. They want to compare Tesla and Mercedes Benz crash rates because they are in a similar price range?

Mind you he has no data on automated driving crashes.

Ridiculous and short-sighted, the goal (IMO) is for all cars to be automated. And he assumes that just because lidar is expensive now, that it will be in the future, which is just naive.

It is a ROC curve/precision-recall issue basically. Radar has a terrible lateral and even worse to non-existing elevation measurement. Potholes, man holes, Coke cans and ground clutter look all alike and can in fact be detected as "having the negative relative velocity as my car's own velocity". Anyone here actually think Elon uses autopilot?

Not sure about Elon, but I suspect (hope?) most of us Tesla drivers have familiarized themselves with the limitations of the system. Its got a couple scenarios in my experience where it shines - chiefly long drives on clean clear interstates and stop-and-go traffic - but its got suicidal tendencies in others.
