I would think it's humor in the form of speculative fiction. The humor would be pointing at the fact that you can install Linux on mostly anything. Never forget that you can install it on a Commodore 64. I think that's why the author made it. Maybe some sort of ironic pat on the back for the Linux OS because it is so flexible and portable?

Well, I think this is the oddest thing ever submitted to HN, at least as far as I remember. I'm not even sure what it is. It's probably humor, but I'm not sure. Edit: Seems like it's supposed to be speculative fiction. Hm.

It is one of the oldest jokes on the internets. This September will never end.

The date on the article is 2004. That's more of a May the following the year.

Reminds me of a shirt one of my friends has:
