Very nice. I notice I keep accidentally swapping pieces when I mean to switch to highlight a different piece. I wonder if a dragging motion would be more natural.

That can be annoying, I agree. I tried to get drag working nicely when I first started building it, but it was a pain to get it working on all the different mobile browsers. I've put it on my TODO list to revisit though.
I lost a couple of times because of that
