In pitch darkness, IR cameras can only see more than a visual light camera if you somehow had IR headlights that were more powerful than the visual headlights (they probably don't; that would blind other AVs just like high beams blind other drivers). Did you ever use a thermal IR camera ? What you're saying only apply to cheap chi-com cheapo"IR" CCD (the ones you find in home security), not the FLIR/military-grade stuff.

The lady can be seen fairly clearly (even in this poor quality video) at 0.03 and impact occurs at 0.04. That's 1s, which means a distance of approx 17m. If the guy was watching (sort of the point of him being there really) he could have slowed the car significantly and probably even stopped it. These are test vehicles being treated like prod vehicles. They should probably not be on streets with pedestrians quite so soon.

It's clear from the video that a human driver actually would've had more trouble since the pedestrian showed up in the field of view right before the collision, yet that's in the visible spectrum. That's not at all clear to me. I don't know too much about cameras, but it looks to me like the camera is making the scene appear much darker than it actually is. In the video, you can see many street lights projecting down…

Also even if the camera was perfectly accurate about human field of view, no human driver in his right mind would drive so fast with such a poor visibility. Any judge would qualify this as reckless driving.

So either way the software failed:

-If AI misjudged Lidar information and didn’t compute the slow moving pedestrian it’s a fail

-If it didn’t have enough computer vision space it should have slowed down

Possibly in the second scenario the human test driver is at fault too because he should have noticed bad condition and hit the autopilot kill switch.

Something that's worth pointing out as well is what happens to low-light contrast sensitivity as we age. I believe there's something like a 50% loss in night vision between the ages of 20 and 50. This strikes me as a good example of rebutting a point that nobody made. I didn't say I'd hit her on purpose.

But if the conditions depicted in the video are accurate -- meaning, not artificially manipulated to make the lighting appear darker than it was -- then it would be awfully easy to rationalize away any guilt I might feel. If that amounts to victim-blaming, then so be it. When no malice is present, sometimes the victim really is to blame.

Put another way, this is one of those cases where it's better to focus on fixing the problem rather than the blame.

Sodium Vapour (monochromatic) lamps, then a large darker area with a pedestrian in dark clothing with car’s headlights dipped. You will be alarmed at how much stuff you can put on the road and not see it because the road has a lighting pattern that makes it less safe than no lights at all. I dunno, I see a lot better than my dashcam sees stuff in similar conditions. Whether a human would've seen her or not is besides the point, really - the car is supposed to be fitted with sensors that don't rely on visible light, and this looks like the most basic test case you'd run on an AV - big empty road with an obstacle moving at constant speed into the path of the vehicle.

The bike in between the pedestrian and vehicle likely confounded the lidar: too complex a 3D surface, little return from radar. Is it a solid object or a swarm of insects?

Also how well does lidar work against surfaces like textured dark clothing?

This will be a learning experience for everyone, and Waymo is really out of place condemning Uber for this.

replying to the comment above. It is not a terribly lit road. You are being fooled by the terrible dynamic range of the camera.

Nope. That person + bike would have been completely trivial to detect with the LIDAR those cars have mounted on top.

(4) is the key point here, if that's the only meaningful telemetry, they're going way too fast. If you can't see then you can't stop. This is still a computer failure.

There is no way, full stop, that Arizona regulators allowed a driverless car with only a single dashcam quality level camera as telemetry to drive around. Either Uber broke the law and let a car on the road that doesn't have working LIDAR and IR and possibly RADAR or the software just doesn't work.

You can't increase ISO without washing out the areas in the street lights. One of the difficulties not being discussed here is that this is a terribly lit road, with large dark voids between the street lights. And the biker was crossing in the void.

It is not a terribly lit road. You cannot increase ISO, but you CAN increase dynamic range. The human eye, as an example or as another example a much better camera, can easily see those seemingly large dark voids between street lights.

You have no idea where the video came from. Completely conjectural example: uber contacts police (who haven't even tried to find any sd card or download the contents or figure out how to convert it to a format postable on twitter) and says "hey I have the video for you."
