I watched the video a bunch of times and I'm not 100% sure how the vehicle could have reacted at the upper maximum of time where she would have been visible to LIDAR, and maybe for Radar, to make a significant difference. At least given the two options where it could have slowed maybe 10km/hr at most (from the 40mph aka 64km/hr speed limit) but that's still an if and I'm not sure it would have ensure the survivabilit…

Usually it is the law that you are only allowed to drive as fast as the conditions allow (e.g. CA's "Basic Speed Law".) That includes being able to see obstacles in your path early enough to be able to do something about them.

If you can't see far enough to be able to avoid something in the road, you're simply going too fast. That should apply to machines, but it already applies to humans.

The pitch-black spots in the video are almost certainly not pitch-black if you were to look at them.

This car should have slowed down below the speed limit if it cannot safely stop or maneuver upon seeing something enter its field of view.

Also, it should have been using its brights to increase the visible range, to provide backup for the LIDAR that should've caught this.

Wow, that self driving car is total crap if it can't pick up that obstacle. Doesn't get much more obvious than that. Slowly walking from the left lane into your lane on a fairly straight road. Not to nit-pick too much but 'that obstacle' is a person. A person that died because engineering hubris. I think we should be careful in our language in this situation, as it may get away from us. She was not 'an obstacle' or a 'thing to avoid' or 'hobo', she was a living person.

Wow, the pedestrian just walked onto the road without so much of a glance at the direction of incoming cars. Sure, it's the car's responsibility to stop. But still--it's almost like the pedestrian didn't care at all. She never saw the car throughout the entire incident. She never saw it coming. She didn't cared to.

it's almost as if she has done this many times before and never been hit by cars being driven by real people

It's clear from the video that a human driver actually would've had more trouble since the pedestrian showed up in the field of view right before the collision, yet that's in the visible spectrum. In the video, you can see many street lights projecting down…

AFAIK, LIDAR doesn't use just some digicam. So the video we see there should be very different from what the sensors actually see in such a situation.

I’ve driven that location on that road many many times at night and no it is not that dark, it is lit up well like most city streets. The video make the contrast appear greater.

This is pure speculation, but it is my working theory: The car's so called "AI" thought the thing in front of it was a four legged animal (e.g., see " rel="nofollow">https://goo.gl/images/3qAmiM> ). In most states, braking for animals in a way that might endanger others on the road is illegal. So, it decided to go ahead and hit the thing in front of it on purpose. If that is true, then that is a very bad law. If something appers in front of a car I'm driving, the first thing I do, before anything else, is braking. And so should you, and everbody else. First, you save precious reaction time by first braking, then thinking. Second, it might be a human and thus worth much more than a damn car. Third, if it's not a living thing, it's not uncommon for humans to step on the street to go after it.

Any dangers by sudden braking are avoided by mandating sufficient space between cars. If a car breaks suddenly and the car behind it crashes into it, the driver of that second car is responsible for the damages, because they evidently didn't have enough distance to the car in front of it to react in time to danger situations.

I think this seems like exactly the scenario that autonomous driving vehicles are intended to prevent. may be optimistic. Lots of people are hoping they will prevent such scenarios, the motivation for fielding them is more related to making lots of money.

Go to [0] and [1] and count how many times they use the word "safe." We're not hoping autonomous vehicles are safer, we're being sold on them as the safer alternative. Why should I take their marketing at face value?

Of course they are selling them as safe. I still think the funding to work on them is chasing big piles of money.
