If the car was able to pick up the person with the sensors, but the system failed to stop the collision, will the programmers who designed the autonomous system be held ethically accountable for the bug that led to the death? O_O

Yes. I am not sure if self driving cars are subjected to regulatory aspects such as the SDLC in FDA regulated industries but they probably should be (as should embedded computers in autos in general).

The description given before the video was released painted a picture in my mind that the woman was on the median and "suddenly" entered the roadway in front of the vehicle. I pictured someone darting across the road directly in front of the car, with no way to stop in time. This video shows a completely different scenario. This is the real important question. Why didn't the sensor package detect this?

Humans not paying attention can never be solved, but hopefully we can get to the bottom of this failure and then fix it systemically.

Unfortunately given how shady Uber are, we will never be able to trust their technical analysis in the event one is ever released.

It isn't at all clear from the video. Video cameras of this quality vastly underperform human vision in low-light conditions.

Don't forget compression artifacts. A dark object against a dark background in a highly compressed video is going to get compressed into just looking like the background.

It's very disingenuous to release this video. This is not the picture the car saw nor the human. That coupled with the fact that no radar or lidar data was released makes me wonder why the police seem to be bending over backwards to absolve Uber.

Police are nearly always primarily motorists and therefore biased to the motorist perspective.

I agree that IR should have caught the bicyclist earlier, and that it didn't suggests that these cars might also kill quite a few deer with a similar low light profile. You either kill a deer or get killed by a moose... at highway speed.

Indeed, if they can't spot moose at these speeds, it's a non-starter in parts of the country.

This is such a blatant attempt to manipulate public opinion before the actual data appears. Even if Uber's software is ridiculously using visible light for its decision-making, it should definitely be taking into account what it doesn't know. A system like this should not be guessing. There is a giant swath of black in the video; the camera doesn't know what's there. So, the car should be moving so it has a short enough stopping distance to avoid a collision. (Or at least flash the high beams, but that would be pointless, because obviously it isn't actually using this camera. Uber may be run by reckless psychopaths, but their engineers aren't stupid).

I do wonder if perhaps Uber made the video darker before releasing. Or used a camera that is not the main sensing camera. Because I would hope the cars are smart enough to increase ISO to get more detail at night time.

The issue is more with the dynamic range of the sensor than the ISO. Increasing the ISO would blow out the highlights long before providing sufficient detail of the shadows (not to mention the increased noise). Regardless of this camera's performance the LIDAR and other sensors should have picked this up.

Pathetic and sad performance by the vehicle and "safety" driver. The woman does not "appear out of nowhere", she was in the roadway for some time. The woman was not wearing all black, had red hair, and her shoes were reflective. Even if we are to believe that their camera is this crappy, they still have the lidar, and it appears brakes were not applied. Even 500ms of braking * 0.8g = 9mph. That might have saved her life. Ultimately if Ubers car cannot see a pedestrian crossing the street at a walking pace at night and not hit him/her, it should not be operating at night.

Not a fair comparison. The gopro is static in a well lighted corner. It's ideal conditions.

The same camera in movement facing moving lights might never be able to adjust its sensitivity.
