Which country is that? 1700€ net monthly isn't necessarily that little money.
Netherlands.

#122Uhm. No. The most common prostitute is a man selling sex to another man.

#123$300/hour? That is one of the highest paying job i ever heard of.
So many jobs that pay that sort of cash. They're just not easy to get. It's that old 10,000 hours of practice thing again. If you're willing to build up a lot of experience in an arcane technical field that is in continuous demand, you can easily get that sort of cash, particularly in short-term fly-in-and-fix-the-thing gigs. I know of COBOL programmers in a bank that make $150/hr because they are irreplaceable now.…
Assuming $2,000 speaking fee for a 1 hour talk, and say, 2 hours of prep and 1 hour of travel - that's $500 an hour.
Your assumption is way off. I have read from professional public speakers that for every minute of a speech, they will prepare on average about 1 hour. A 60 minute speech would have about 60 hours of preparation behind it.I am practising public speaking and while I haven't done longer speeches, my experience shows about the same ratio.

#124I wonder how she does her taxes.
Ha ha, a little while ago The Times did a reader's questions interview with Belle du Jour and all anyone wanted to know was if she'd paid her taxes. Yes, she said, her accountant does it as any other professional services.

Yeah, if you can find 8 billable hours/day, every business day; otherwise, it's not really fair to make a meaningful comparison to a "job."

Then if it's legal, why the implicit threat of police raid is in the article?
PS This tells you everything you need to know about Times readers (of which I am one). We don't care what consenting adults get up to on private property so long as their civic duty is fulfilled.

"High taxes have a tendency to mean cheaper child care." Is subsidized child care, really cheaper - if you are paying higher taxes to receive the subsidies? Kind of an odd logic.
Yes it is cheaper if it's other people's taxes . That's why no-one campaigns for tax cuts so they can afford childcare.

You've got a great theory. And yet, it somehow does not fit the data. As of 2001 (the most recent data I've seen), more than 2/3 of poor households had at least 2 rooms/person, and only 6% were overcrowded. Just under 3/4 owned a car. http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2004/01/understandi... In the same year, 80% of the poor neither had nor were looking for a job, so bus fare is irrelevant to most of them. (Thi…
It fits. The Heritage Foundation study assailed the Census Bureau's definition of poverty. My point made no comment about that; I was just debunking the idea that a family of four can live "easily" on a single minimum wage income, which is preposterous.

I think I made the link with the joke because you used the words 'child care', but still that did not deserve a downmod.
Oh. You still need to pay for after-school child care; that's what I was referring to. School here gets out at 3:00PM; we get home from work around 6:00PM.
