> Lingering effects of the great recession Other countries went through the Great Recession, didn't recover as well as the U.S., and are not suffering from the problem. Also, the problem started in the last couple of years while the Great Recession began in 2008 (EDIT: and has since ended, with unemployment low for the last two years).

> Other countries went through the Great Recession, didn't recover as well as the U.S. The US recovery looks decent in top-line aggregate terms, but the distributional aspects are quite bad. (And that was true of the recovery from the previous recession, as well.) For broad social impacts, the distributional aspects are more significant than the top-line aggregates.

The big lie is that these recessions hit everyone in society equally. They don't.

I’m surprised to see nobody call out alcohol consumption. While this is a few years old, the data should be relevant; alcohol takes years to manifest into full-blown health crises: https://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/Surveillance95/CONS1... Additionally, there has been an upswing in youth consumption in the past decade directly. We need to have a public conversation about what we’re doing to ourselves, especially…

It’s not just alcohol. Diets heavy on fat and cholesterol seem to only get more popular year after year.

> The last time life expectancy was lower than in the preceding year was in 1993. The last time it fell for two consecutive years was in 1962-63.

Nothing really bad happened in 1962 or 1963. So couldn't the current two-year "trend" be explained by randomness? Life expectancy can't continue to rise forever.

Undoubtedly, there are plenty of bad carbohydrates in the world.

> If nothing is done, the number of Americans with health insurance is expected to decline by millions this year (due to the repeal of the health care tax (I forget the term they used) in the new tax law). This is a bad metric. We should be worried about healthcare costs, not insurance coverage. You can have "universal coverage" and still be wrong, because people are paying $5000+/year in insurance premiums they can'…

> If it didn't cost a hundred thousand dollars to get sick then it wouldn't be a problem for people to not be insured against it. This is a dicey one. One of the things that drives treatment costs up is more advanced technology. Should we go back to 70s/80s-era cancer treatments, HIV treatments, surgical outcomes? We need a lot more national discussion about where the real opportunities to save money are, and what sh…

"We need a lot more national discussion about where the real opportunities to save money are..."

No. We don't.

1/3 to 1/2 of our health care costs is overhead (blame shifting, profiteering).

Compare and contrast is sufficient. We don't even have to compare USA & Canada. We could just compare Medicare to everything else.

That's not a matter of splitting out stats, because the information gathered doesn't support that. That kind of research does get done, but it's expensive, time consuming, and only really possible when alternatives have been fairly widely applied for enough years to have good data to support meaningful analysis of expected lifetime (and may still, even then, be misleading I'd treatment protols for either drug have ev…

But it is something worth working toward in the future yes? Perhaps when we have massive amounts of data.

Sure, though (and this is usually reflected in research that it includes it now), lifespan alone for alternatives isn't the only or necessarily most important piece of comparative information; relative risks of other conditions even if they are non-fatal and other quality-of-life concerns are important, too. For aggregate purposes when we aren't comparing path risks but looking at overall status, the patallel is merely statistics on the incidence of various conditions and effects with quality-of-life impacts, which is currently done separately from life expectancy.

The problem is that we keep trying to pretend that it both is and isn't a market. In theory you can actually have a free market for healthcare. You get cancer, there are multiple competing providers of cancer treatment products and you choose one based on effectiveness and price. A better treatment can charge more, but if it's only 5% better and costs a hundred times as much then most people won't use it. Which will…

I have no idea what you're talking about about.

Don't confuse Freedom Markets™ with incentives.

Unless there's been some very recent findings that I missed, everything I've been reading for the last several years has found that fat and cholesterol are not the problems we once thought they were.

> everything I've been reading Sounds like you only prefer to read stuff that is pro-Keto. Saturated fat and cholesterol are the cause of many western diseases. Cholesterol-deniers are setting people up to get fatty streaks in their artieries. A low fat/cholesterol diet (especially plant based) is the only one that has been proven to reverse heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Many diets are good for losing weight, bu…

Sounds like you need to check your assumptions as you have no way of knowing what I prefer to read.

Others have already provided studies to refute your claim, but here's one more: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20071648

I'm not disputing the findings, but take a look at the "conflict of interest" section of the link you provided.
