When the solution to every problem is more government, more redistribution, and higher taxes, this is the inevitable result. A tragedy caused 100% by politics

It takes a special kind of talent to impoverish countries as blessed with natural resources as Venezuela and Argentina.

Countries with massive natural resources generally have a poor redistribution of money, it's not always a disaster like Venezuela but it's more a curse than a blessing.

Yep. Chavez started as a proletariat leader. I believe some liberal leaders like Sean Penn publicly supported Chavez (? someone fact check me here).

In the UK Jeremy Corbyn as recently as last January (when all the signs were already clear) was holding up Venezuela as a role model for the UK. He still hasn't denounced the regime there.

Yep and here's Michael Moore when Chavez died: https://twitter.com/MMFlint/status/309124649244057600

"Hugo Chavez declared the oil belonged 2 the ppl. He used the oil $ 2 eliminate 75% of extreme poverty, provide free health & education 4 all" - Michael Moore

The amount of comments on this thread decrying 'socialism' with very pithy comments is concerning. I guess the whole internet is infected with trolls now, especially political ones...

Or those who understand economics and history.

I'd like some of them in here, but you're a troll. Or maybe we're the "fucking morons." Oh well, mods in California will be awake soon enough.

Maybe we can thank the multiple economic sanctions that the US decided against Venezuela. And sometimes, too much natural resources and not diversified enough can be a curse, not a blessing. We saw it here with the drop of the oil price.

Nah, this is the result of corruption. We should be worried in the US, this could be our future.

Corruption can only harm you to the extent that corrupt organizations have power over you.

e.g. You worry about the cops being corrupt; you don't worry much about a local restaurant owner being corrupt because you can just eat somewhere else.

This is why small government, freedom and individualism are very simple and effective antidotes to corruption.

The word "socialism" is missing from the article. The situation must be a natural disaster.

That's not socialism. That's a dictatorship and corruption.

it never is socialism, never ever. it is a common thread when socialism fails it is because it wasn't really socialism. socialism works until you run out of wealth that other people had that was easily accessible. then comes the never ending cycle of finding a new bad guy to take from.

all the fans of socialism always forget, the same problem that doomed Venezuela exists in all nations. Politicians. Politicians who are above the law, who are the one percent, who are there to lead and by that requirement deserve special status. Doesn't matter what you call your government type, they always have more power and less restrictions on their actions.

the difference is that it is implied in a socialist society that there is no private property or very little. as such what is there to aspire too? some quasi socialist countries try to juggle this issue to some success but are they really socialist or truly capitalist with some "socialist" qualities?

when government fails to protect the private property rights of people, to the effort of their work, their physical property, the wealth they create in their businesses, it is only a matter of time before it folds. you can only take until the wealth dries up. once that happens you only have force

And Venezuela was among the richest countries in south America not too long ago (early 20th century). This is a cautionary tale.

The thing is, having a great economy when over half of the population is living in misery (even worse than now), it's not a great alternative. That's why lots of people still support Maduro.

Venezuela is a cautionary tale of a wide spectrum of economic policies, not only the recent ones as the media would like us to think.

Every socialist country is or will be a cautionary tale.

Yet we still don't learn the lesson after all the countries that have bit the dust.

The richness in natural resources is kind of part of the problem though? It allowed a small group of rulers to maintain control without caring that much about the country as a whole.

Well, that's my interpretation of the situation? It seems like the common way for this kind of situations to arise. The political ideology that the rulers choose as costume for their kleptocracy seems only marginally relevant.

How many socialist regimes need to end in "dictatorship and corruption" before the world realises that the latter is the inevitable consequence of the former?

Yep. Chavez started as a proletariat leader. I believe some liberal leaders like Sean Penn publicly supported Chavez (? someone fact check me here).

Sean Penn is a movie actor, not a "liberal leader," what are you on?
