I was there supposedly to implement state-of-the-art trading systems and processes. I left after 2+ years with little to show. The pace of progress is glacial. Managers are scared to change the status quo because of fears of rocking the boat. Embarking on new projects risks making them look bad if the projects don't reach expectations.
One of the problems is HSBC's DPA, deferred prosecution agreement, with the Justice Department. Basically, HSBC needs to operate on a clean track record for 5+ years and the US government will avoid fining them even more. The result is a culture of fear combined with zero innovation. Just stay the course, get paid nicely in your nice cushy jobs. Screw over your clients in the meantime if you have to.
