I recently drove an Accord with lane-following and speed adaptive cruise-control recently. It completely failed (but thankfully by refusing to try) in the one instance that I wanted to use it (stop-and-go traffic), but it was nerve wracking when it was on as it kept losing the lane. People naturally alter the throttle and speed when going around corners and up slight inclines. It feels alien when that doesn't happen.

Surely 'speed-adaptive cruise control' is an oxymoron?

I just ordered a Model S with Autopilot, and as I've been reading the comments on the various Tesla forums, I'm not sure I'm ever going to use it. Some of the stories are honestly terrifying (sudden deceleration on the highway, swerving into other lanes, etc).

You're getting a lot of naysayers here who take one experience and extrapolate it to mean everyone. There are a lot of Tesla drivers out there who use it every day to and from work. I suggest you try using and evaluating the system yourself.

This is not true at all. Tesla's do not use the car in front to switch lanes.

It depends on what mode you set it to, but under some circumstances, it does.

I'm not sure what to say when the code I recently turned in (and passed) for the path planning project of term 3 in Udacity's Self-Driving Car Engineer works better at changing lanes than Tesla's system: https://github.com/andrew-ayers/udacity-sdc/blob/master/Term... The problem Tesla has is that their system only has ~ 40 meters visibility to back or front.

That means if you're on the Autobahn, at say 130km/h in the right lane, and a Porsche is coming from behind at 300km/h, the Tesla will not be able to see it, and consider the lane free.

Just take any job that requires a significant highway commute, you'll see more than that. Whenever you get full speed traffic occasionally interrupted by traffic jams (from whatever cause, other accident, tolls, weather, low angle sunlight, construction, etc.), you'll get a higher incidence of rear-enders. There was a cruise control ish system I heard about on a car (a Mercedes, iirc) in Germany when I was a kid: instead of a target speed, you set a maximum speed, such that pressing normally down on the gas allowed the car to accelerate up to that speed. It trims down the excess gas to avoid exceeding the maximum speed. If you released the gas, the car would coast; and if you pushed the pedal down close to the floor (i.e. "to the metal"), it would allow you to exceed the speed you'd set, for example to momentarily accelerate in order to pass.

I loved this system and have always wished for something like this on a car in the US. I've never liked the common cruise control in the US -- where you set a target and it applies the gas for you -- because I didn't like how removing my foot from the gas pedal moved my foot fractions of a second further from the brake in an emergency.

I often think of Manhattan wrt the autonomous taxi believers. (Which while extreme for the US is precisely the sort of place they'd presumably have to handle.) I sorta go: "Have you ever been there and looked around?" Design an AI that can get cross-town in Manhattan at rush hour and I start erecting a shrine to our robotic overlords.

Isn't that easily countered by comparing Tesla Model S' overall rate of accidents vs another similar vehicle, with similar safety rating, including all self-driven and human-driven miles? There should be a proportional reduction.

Even worse: I've been on several mountain roads with stretches of one-way traffic, where either an officer has to signal a switch in lane direction every few minutes (which might not be clear otherwise, especially around a bend), or cars have to occasionally reverse to let opposing traffic through . Don't think I'll ever be letting an AI do that!

I think you can argue that at least those are outlier very rural sorts of places. It's harder to write off major US cities. (To be clear, interstates are still compelling uses but they're not universal self-driving.)
