Do any significant number of people genuinely take Bitcoin to be the future of currency at this point?

No one is betting that the current version of Bitcoin is the future of currency. They are betting that the version of Bitcoin that exists in 20 or 30 years is the future of currency.

Can someone give me some context on what is causing this?

A change in the protocol that requires the majority of miners to accept the change. There is no central authority, so they can not simply say "protocol x will be in place from August 1st". As in any community, not everybody agreed on the best course of action, so the outcome is not certain.
