True true, but the 100k is more than just installers. The US employs a lot of engineers, and we export design/technology to the rest of the world.

Those stats are not for electricity, they're for total energy consumption including transportation.

Yes, and as the other poster points out we'll end up using less overall energy, but the point under discussion was demand for these jobs, which produce electricity.

*40 years ago. I was getting my CS degree 20 years ago (1997). At that point there was no doubt that software was going to be a long, sustained and growing field. 40 years ago ~1977 you would have had to be a very forward thinker to imagine the state of personal computing and software needs.

By way of context, I got an engineering degree (not in CS) in the late 70s and I barely touched a computer during my four years. I didn't even use a word processor until graduate school, and that was a mainframe-based line editor. I did have classmates who majored in CS but computer use was certainly not widespread.

I haven't seen this many people employed by hot air since Theranos.

Technically all of the gas turbine industry lives by making hot air.

Nuclear, coal, and geothermal all use steam, so there's a bunch more hot air for ya.

From a programming/hardware hacker perspective, are there any opportunities in wind generation worth exploring? Perhaps mini-turbines, or a turbine array with wind positioning?

There was some hype around microturbines a few years back but a lot of the ROI claims were found to be, um, "optimistic." I assume that today's PV tech makes them even less interesting even if some of the assumptions that go into pricing solar can be questionable as well.

The great thing about renewables is everyone's situation is different. IE wind might be the #1 option in an area with little solar radiation, or micro turbines might be a better fit vs giant turbines in other areas. Major diversity in the problem space depending on geography.

I worry many of these jobs will be temporary. We're just ramping up production of turbines and other equipment. Installations will peak within the next (maybe) 10 years and from then there will be less and less demain as maintenance will be the only thing we will require.

1. Nothing is forever.

2. The thing you worry about is in other words that wind power will be a cheap sustainable energy source.

Because a wind turbine is limited to the area of the swept blades, and larger turbines can reach the faster winds that occur higher off the ground, large turbines are MUCH more effective than small ones. Turbine blades that are twice as long can capture four times as much wind, and the tops of those blades capture faster wind, too.

On the other hand, ignoring integration and installation costs, solar panels scale linearly with size. So small solar makes much more sense than small wind.

That's the beauty of capitalism. You can just let it run its course and not worry about it. If something is less efficient, it will not be able to compete in the market for very long.

My basic idea was that when seeing this headline people don't go "more people? great!" but instead go "more people? how can we fix that?"

That is a good entrepreneurial instinct. If you or a competitor comes in and can create the same value with fewer people, then that drives consumer prices down, which is one of the end goals.

Having said that, there is nothing wrong with employing more people, as long as they are creating marginal economic value. Hiring 10 people to make $10M is better than 5 people to make $9M for a company.
