The very best wines and the $2.95 stuff are in essentially the same bottle.

Nope. This is (one of?) the cheapest wine in Italy: http://www.horecare.it/imagesvinobrik/full013.jpg This is a really good Italian wine: http://www.terredifirenze.it/sites/default/files/bottiglia%2...

This is cool, adding it to my list of colors tools.

Great tool. Especially for people without a lot of design or color theory experience. As someone with both, I find the palette a bit too saturated for my tastes.

I've tried to only use the colors listed in the material design docs, but usually make my own palettes in the long run.

Most people would describe terminal software as hideous. Happiness comes from visual variety.

Are the blind happy?

Not blind, but I had eye surgery about a year and a half ago, followed by a recovery period about 4 weeks longer than I was told to expect, during which I came to appreciate things like contrast. Not coincidentally, I also realized my software was literally* painful to use for someone in my condition.

I have learned to give a shit about color choices.

*That's the literal 'literally', not the figurative one.

Are there some good resources you could recommend for color theory? I've come across lots of palette tools but little indication of what makes colors work, aside from contrast indications. I feel very much like someone in a workshop with every tool imaginable and no idea of how to use them.

I'm not a color expert, but is there a color tool which would narrow down available color options for the Secondary color palette? Primary palette is cool, but I can still make it all look ugly by choosing random colors for the Secondary palette, which is exactly what I would want to avoid.

There are a few, https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/ is one I was recommended many years ago. Interested to see what the new hotness is though.

I've seen the opposite as well: ugly looking terminal or DOS based but very productive software was replaced with spiffy looking windows or web based software that was slightly slower or unable to keep up with the type-ahead of the users and this led to huge disappointment. I'm firmly believe if it doesn't work it doesn't matter how good it looks and if it works but looks bad that's better than the reverse. Then once…

You're comparing apples with oranges. Terminal/DOS-based software isn't ugly, it's just a different interface (GUI vs. non-GUI). Of course some technical people that know what they're doing will enjoy using the command line because you don't have a GUI that gets in the way, but using this fact to "prove" that people like ugly software better doesn't make sense—it's just a bad example.

I worked for a very large corp that wanted to convert an application that we used to process applications. It took less than a second to process 99 percent of applications. They wanted to switch from a cli app to web. I told them they were nuts. We could currently process the days queue in minutes. Sure the company could have loaded all the data and used js to feed them out quickly, but the programmers had no idea what we were doing and certainly wouldn't have designed it correctly. The company wasn't changing it to be trendy, they were changing it to make things easier. It would have had the opposite effect.

Uhm interesting. Seems like a good tool but either I'm using it wrong or it's very weird that it doesn't seem to provide an option for the accent color. here's some other similar tools that I collected over time https://www.sankk.in/material-mixer/ http://flatuicolors.com https://www.materialpalette.com

Shameless plug: http://0xrgb.com (similar to flatuicolors, which was using Flash by that time), 0xrgb also includes ios, tango, solarized and material color schemes.
