#75There's lots of concern about the bizarre relationship disclosure. But perhaps even more bizarre is that this deal has a structure closer to a strategic move than actual philanthropy. Am I massively misreading this?
This page details how their main goal with the $30M isn't to increase OpenAI's pledged funds by 3%, thereby reducing the marginal "AI Risk" by less than 3%. The goal is to have a seat on the board (basically -- they use a lot more words to say this in the announcement). What on earth is going on where a charitable organization with Open in its name feels it needs to buy its way onto the board of a prominent non-profit in order to:
"Improve our understanding of the field of AI research"
"[get] opportunities to become closely involved with any of the small number of existing organizations in “industry”"
and "Better position us to generally promote the ideas and goals that we prioritize"
Isn't the whole point of "open philanthropy" that you can direct funds to organizations more open about what's going on?!

Yeah I feel like it's turning AI into a bit of a joke amongst other theoretical computer scientists.

I don't see this as a problem. If I had tons of money and knew someone (by any connection) who was doing amazing work I would definitely chip in.

You don't need to prove anything about an AGI system if you can prove things about its I/O capabilities. I recognize that proving things about machine learning models is very hard, I tried to do some research in that area and got practically no where. Perhaps, but if the alternative is either incredible fear of the technology, or the technology potentially killing humanity, then "making great strides in a select few fields" seems quite good.

OpenAI still isn't open source, or open in any other sense of the word. It is a private organization that will own any technology developed. Again, OpenAI isn't Open.
Nor is it AI.
I'm sure what they do falls within the rather broad field of AI. It's just not AGI, which is the thing they talk about to get people to give money to their AI projects.
