Sitting in a chair all day coding isn't great, but

a) long haul truckers usually seem to work long hours

b) at a desk you can at least get up and walk around occasionally

c) usually truckers end up eating at fast food places/diners along the way, mostly unhealthy food

Your objective is to get a paycheck. It doesn't have to be more complicated than that. Then, use your off time do things more important to you.

Getting that paycheck saps the majority of the time and energy of a given person. Using a paycheck as a side effect to actually do something useful seems like a very strange system.

It's the capitalist system. If you want to set the objective, then get to work and create the means for yourself to do so. It's so easy to blame the boomers, but in my day job, all I see are younger people who expect a promotion after 6 months, while the boomers are happy to have a job, come in, do what's expected, and don't complain.

That still seems expensive. You can get by with that much in rural areas of the US or Detroit.

This really hits home for me. Seems like every older family member I have just has tons and tons of useless stuff. I dont get it.

Rationing was still in place when my parents were children (they are early boomers), even after that material goods and many foods weren't readily available, you can see how they developed the attitude that accumulation is important.

Unfortunately they haven't been able to turn it off and their constant pursuit of comfort hasn't done them any good in the longer term.

Where?

I have family that was/are long haul truckers and none of them made anywhere near $70k a year and certainly didn't get a signing bonus(?!)

From what I could find online median salary is around $50k, which is about right from my experience.

the only way they keep the ongoing strife from really effecting the political system is by keeping the left and right wings fighting each other over often minor disagreements.

Unfortunately, the disagreements are not minor anymore, as you can see on the social networks and in the streets of the USA.
