For what? Microsoft is not really a dominant force in the server space.

Azure is one of the big three in cloud computing - Google, Amazon, and Microsoft

And they also run some pretty large things that could be run on ARM with no visible impact to customers. Bing, hosted Outlook, etc.

Competition is great, but this also seems like a rather big setback to the goal of having multi-cloud applications, in instances where the app can only run on x86-64.

Writing architecture-specific code is what would be a setback to that goal. Either write portable code, or be prepared to translate non-portable parts to new CPUs from time to time.
