As I have grown up with all kinds of animated cartoons on the TV, I always wanted a computer game which sported that level of graphics. It turns out, that from the raw hardware capability, computers long ago exceeded this ability, yet there is a big scarcity of real animated games. Windwaker (HD) is a really nice exception from that. It looks like an animate comic movie. From this point of view, I am actually happy t…

With Switch they've not only avoided enslaving themselves to the biggest/best bandwagon, but actually used the fact that their hardware is relatively modest to enable them to do things XBox and PS4 can't. Their ARM silicon is more heavily optimized for games than most tablet CPUs, but still enables them to offer an easily portable package. My iPad is an awesome games platform but we're not going to see a game like Lo…

Yup, it's a smart pivot. Feels very similar to the issues that OEMs face under price pressure. Nintendo has always had a very strong portable showing and I think this will play to their strengths quite well.

One thing that is really interesting to me is that they are going back to the roots of the original Zelda: with exploration and discovery being a key part of the game. So much so that they made prototypes in the original Zelda style: http://www.polygon.com/2017/3/1/14780954/the-legend-of-zelda... . This to me seems like a great strategy of helping communicate the 'soul' of something to team members by imitating the o…

That's really cool. I was amazed that the new Dragon Quest is going to have a parallel "retro" representation of itself in game.

For the life of me I can't remember the name, but the Zelda for the DS with the painting/switching to 2d mode also captured that first couple Zelda games aesthetic. You could go to almost any dungeon whenever, and find all sorts of fun secrets scattered throughout the open world.

You can probably get a used Wii U for cheap. It doesn't have a lot of interesting games, but for a low price, it's likely worth it for the Mario games and Zelda, and a few more.

can be hard to find though...I mean Nintendo effectively discontinued it so it isn't on any retailer shelves now.

They are all over eBay.

I enjoyed it a lot as well. The impression I have is that it's Skyward Sword, not Twilight Princess, which had a big divide between critic and user reviews.

I guess I just have weird taste, Skyward sword is my favorite Zelda game. Apparently Zelda games are just divisive in general

Probably because people can't decide if ocarina of Time or the NES/SNES games are the "true" Zelda games.

You're thinking of 'The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds'

The "spiritual successor" to 'The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past' (my first, and still favorite, Zelda title).

I was quite pleased with A Link Between Worlds after my disappointments with Skyward Sword (I love love love the art style, but disliked the game due to motion controls) and Twilight Princess (I felt they dropped the ball on Wolf Link, the game felt too linear and Wolf Form was mostly used for bug hunting...)

> Link gets more health and stamina as you progress, and you can acquire stronger weapons and armor, but he never gets stronger himself. He doesn’t learn to swing a sword or shoot a bow any better. But you do. If this is true, that's wonderful, and if more games became more like that again, I'd be interested in them again. Even just the fact that the reviewer mentioned this as a good thing made me smile.

I've been lamenting this ever since CoD 4 which many hail as a pinnacle in gaming. That was the day that gaming went from performance to grind. In QuakeWorld when I started a match, I had the exact same pre-conditions as Thresh, other than me sucking as a player in comparison. The same was true in Counter-Strike (any iteration), and now Dota 2, which I've played for 2000 hours. I've stopped playing every CoD, BF, LoL…

I think you'd like overwatch a great deal. There is literally no advantage whatsoever you can gain via having played the game longer other than your own increased skill, but there are some fun things like skins (well, I think they're fun.) Not only that, the barrier to entry is practically non-existent, and yet there oodles to master.

Stardew Valley fans have been able to play it on a handheld (along with many other PC games) for a few months now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9qHDHzw4ag I've got a GPD Win and it's absolutely no substitute for a Switch if you're a Nintendo fan . I've somehow managed to not hear about this at all, so thanks for the news. Although I wasn't focused at all at handheld/portability. Just mentioning the Harvest Moon/Stardew Valley fanbase (and the huge overlap between the two). My argument was that Nintendo survives almost entirely off hyper-loyal fanbases for their exclusive titles. Be it Mario, Pokémon, Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem, etc. Third party games exist bu…

I agree completely. My view on this is the hyper-loyal fanbase is large enough for Switch to be sustainable, but I don't know if it can take them to Wii (original) numbers.

Wii Sports exposed Nintendo to an audience way beyond their hyper-loyal fanbase. Outside of the marquee Nintendo titles and some AAA third party titles, there were a lot of really bad games in the Wii library.

It's unfortunate that Zelda was released against Horizon: Zero Dawn (which is beyond amazing on a PS4 Pro), as there is now a lot of competition over the past couple months for good games out now (and such limited time to play!); something which hasn't happened to this degree this generation of consoles.

My understanding is neither the switch nor Zelda are available to the public yet. Am I confused about your comment maybe?

Horizon was released on Tuesday and, like Zelda, is a 30+ hour game.
