+1 on the X1 Carbon. I made the switch this year, too, post MacBook Pro announcement. Have been running Fedora flawlessly. Cheers.

Same for me - last I checked, Gimp's UI is too damn awful. But I only need 5% of PHotoshop's features (smart selection, fill with color, resize, crop, optimize for web) to optimize images for web work

Im also going to make the switch with the Lenovo X1. Apple are just taking the piss with peripherals and cost now.

Nice read, gives me more faith in my choice.

I agree that desktop on linux is ready, with the main trade-off being: you have to spend more time setting things up, but you can customise your software/hardware to any level you want. ( and just like Y software, there's X hardware that might not work with linux. those damn printers... )

Btw, I also started with Ubuntu but I'm finding Arch a much better and up to date distro.

Gimp's UI makes me really sad :( -- I used to be a HUGE proponent of it, since I had grown up using it. I had never known photoshop before, so gimp's UI made sense to me.

3-4 years ago they seem to have changed (apparently to make things closer to photoshop, is my guess?), and now it seems like the UI sucks for everybody.
