#32One question that interests/concerns me is making judgement calls about what is/is not a political story.
Some links will be cut and dry, some will not. Some comments will be immediately identified as political, some will just be politics adjacent.
For instance, on a story about self driving cars, will it be appropriate to talk about UBI? On a story about cryptography, will it be acceptable to talk about how it applies to political dissidents?
Still, I have always found HN moderation to be reasonable, and I expect this to be the same. This is also something I think is desperately needed, we could all use a cooling off period, and it'll be nice not to be bombarded with US politics from yet another angle.

#33I'm a little skeptical of this.... What's the ulterior motive here? We all know SamA was very anti-trump, is this an alternative method to keep the new US political regime from affecting YC? It's almost a weird form of discussion censorship. Whose idea was this?
It's just one lousy week. Is this a critical week politically speaking?

#34I wonder if any of this has anything to do with Peter Thiel? The guy will most likely be judged harshly by history for aligning himself ideologically with Trump (i.e. stoking the flames of racism, sexism, etc.). He already is by current HN members. Just thinking out loud.

It's amazing how quickly examples of the problem dang specifically mentioned have popped up, like this comment. Assuming bad faith without evidence is a big part of the issue here.
Im not assuming bad faith, just said I was skeptical. YC is a business and they are very interested in making money. Since the CEO of YC was very outspoken against one political candidate and now there is a week long ban I was just curious. Ive always seem YC as very open to intelligent honest discussion, so a ban like this seemed odd to me. That's why I asked the question, I probably could have phrased it better.

#38Thank you, I'll happily flag down politics on HN.
Politics has caused me to start using new software so I can filter Twitter, change my subreddits, and aggressively unfollow people on Facebook (even family at this point).
And still I can't avoid it... though perhaps for the best, since social media by-and-large is just a distraction from real work and real life. I'm far better off coding, reading books, and playing go than reading garbage political news nd opinions from shrill internet denizens.

#39I thought this was already every week on HN. There are very few politics related articles. Pushing the point is a bit much IMO.

#40I welcome this experiment. There are so many other places for discussion and news about politics, but less so about startups and technology-hacker-related stories.
