That's not exactly the same as choosing to use something that is hosted on someone else's server, which they could then subsequently modify now that you are using it in a very high-profile project.

Of course, judging candidates' by the code quality of their campaign websites is a rather obscure and somewhat useless pastime.

In theory at least, and it certainly should be. Often it looks more like a government by the millionaires, for the corporations. But there's increasing attention for turning that around, and this project looks like a small part of that.

.us is barely used. The three letter TLDs started out as US only because the whole internet started out as US only. The first country that got its own national TLD was Netherland (.nl). .us was introduced later, but by that time, the ship had sailed.

Why would we need fairness ? They financed and created the internet, they can have at least a TLD.
