I have ADHD, and it's really difficult to describe to people how the "self stimulation" works. It's almost like I need to keep part of my brain busy so the other "quieter" part can work. Music, driving, pacing around, and to a lesser extent fidgeting or tapping can all "placate" that part of my brain so the other can actually do work.
