And this cloud setup is going to cost probably for few hundreds of dollars a month. Has anybody working towards serverless version of wp?

Something like https://beta.getshifter.io? Unfortunately only as 'full SaaS' available, so the 'build process' and hosting is managed by them.

Before you hop on board with this "pain free" solution, you should accept the fact that you may end up maintaining this: https://github.com/widdix/aws-cf-templates/blob/master/wordp...

There should be easier way, e.g. in Azure you can start WordPress (includes MySQL, limited to one app service instance) with one click, not sure what are the costs of maintaining that, but at least starting one in that case is pain free.

I can host several WordPress sites on a 5$ / month droplet. How much would this AWS version cost? In 99,99% of the cases it's not every an option

This is clearly for sites that require more than a fraction of a droplet to run. Just because WordPress can be run on a tiny instance doesn't mean that every WordPress user does -- some sites are actually popular.
