I think it's great that they're taking the big risks needed to move the industry forward, and not letting the lawyers run the company. Pilot here. Airplanes have autopilot. While on autopilot you are still expected to be monitoring the flight and take control at a moments notice. Autopilot does not allow the pilot to take a nap or go in the back and party with the flight attendants. Autopilot is the correct term. I'm tired of always having to cater to the lowest common denominator.

Your average car driver gets a few weeks of training at age 15 or 16 and a cursory written test. What does a pilot get?

> I can't think of a precedent for this Autopilot 1.0 was the precedent. They announced that at the 'D' event that all cars shipping from then on would have AP hardware in. The capabilities were progressively rolled out depending on the tech package you purchased over the next 12 months.

But new buyers weren't getting less than previous buyers, they just weren't getting everything at the time of purchase. That's actually pretty common.

This is a clear "temporary" downgrade of capabilities in exchange for a later payoff.

that's the indirectly part. he absolutely should have been paying attention and kept his hands on the wheel but it was in the uncanny valley of it really works pretty damn well 95% of the time until it doesn't. the sensor and the system failed there.

That's a really fucking shitty thing to do, and is gonna cause some pretty big waves IMO if they follow through with it.

The issues with not being able to modify your own stuff is already really shitty, but its not something that the average Joe really can understand easily, and even less care about it.

But not being able to USE your car for some things? That just screams easy headlines and it's a reason I might not get a Tesla in the future.

Those are concept cars, concept cars always look like that before the final designs come about. Fashion does the same thing.

The 'final designs' of other companies' EVs still look ridiculous. Volt, Leaf, i8, none of them look like regular cars like Teslas do.

I think the Volt looks pretty good. Better than a Tesla, which is just a generic black sedan, not remarkably different from the look of a Honda, Lexus, Audi, etc.

Tesla is known for doing things without precedent. They also have the ability to push major updates OTA to their vehicles, which is what enables them to give "less" while promising more. Like the release said, they'll have the hardware, it just needs to be enabled.

This isn't that uncommon in the automotive industry tbh. Features including performance related features have been pushed via software updates for years. Anything from navigation to cruise control to sport packages have been deployed either OTA or via a manual update. Tesla is just pushing it to a new limit (not necessarily a good thing) and is actually advertising every change and feature update.

Can you give any examples of other feature improvements in cars that have been pushed via OTA?
