I make a regulatory compliance software. Apple refused to list my App until I removed functionality at their request. Functionality that is required for compliance. Apple's arrogance in running their store may eventually cause it's decline.

I wouldn't expect Apple to understand compliance for every possible use case. Apple doesn't have to bend their rules to comply with apps that want to comply with local/state/provincial/federal laws, they can just say "We don't support x feature, and therefore you can't distribute through our store."

| "We don't support x feature, and therefore you can't distribute through our store."

Of course, for iOS, this also means "you can't write apps for our platform."

Not allowing third party stores in the Store is a security feature because they can install APKs that have not passed through Google's security scanner. Google does not prohibit you from installing third party stores. Also, how are they using their dominance for search and browsers to do something? I can install Firefox on Android, I cannot install Firefox on iOS. I can do "Hey, Cortana" if I install Cortana on my An…

> are forced to do this by their shareholders No they aren't. They are using their dominance in search to push chrome on users every chance they get, which has resulted in them dominating the browser space as well. Or do you think Chrome was just good enough to push out IE entirely on merit? > This is illegal and immoral Immoral is exploiting tax loopholes for billions of dollars.

> Or do you think Chrome was just good enough to push out IE entirely on merit?

Pretty much the case for older versions of IE. It became the dominant browser even when it was not installed by default.

Microsoft is catching up though.

I don't get why people downvote this comment, it is factually correct. You are not entitled to do whatever you feel is right on the platform of someone else. I don't like giving Apple a cut but I recognise that it is their property and I cannot dictate that Apple has to change their rules to accommodate me.

> You are not entitled to do whatever you feel is right on the platform of someone else. An iPhone-owner's phone is not Apple's platform: it's its owner's platform. It is not Apple's property once money has been exchanged for the phone.

Now read again what he wrote:

> From what I understand, Apple doesn't force anyone. It's up to them to use it or not. They can always NOT deliver apps for iOS if they think 30% is too much.

Is it not clear that he is talking about the 30% cut that Apple takes for distributing apps on their app store? Do you own the app store if you buy an iPhone? Is it this what you are saying?

This is the first time I've heard of this (not a mac user but am a developer). At least as this is software for developers, I reckon most won't mind buying it outside the appstore, it sounds really useful.

It's a lifesaver on planes where you won't have internet. If only I could download an archive of stackoverflow too, then I'd be set.

Dash already includes the ability to download offline Stackoverflow datasets by language.

I use `devdocs.io`. It's open source and works great!

Kinda puts it in perspective how weird it is that companies have so much control over how software is distributed and sold these days. This would never have happened a decade ago.

> This would never have happened a decade ago.

Happened 30 years ago with Nintendo.

No one is going after Google for allowing third party stores. Google's trouble in Europe is about: 1. Not paying taxes 2. Using their dominance in Search to promote their other products and services while obscuring competitors 3. Using their dominance in mobile to promote their search and web browser 4. Not allowing third parties to use the Play Store which is the default and dominate store for android devices. Allow…

Who said Apple was ?

It's hilariously bizarre how you put this strawman up like criticising Google for their legitimately dodgy and anti-competitive practices has anything to do with Apple.

Give up? I wish more apps were sandboxed! If an app can function inside the sandbox (and the overwhelming majority of apps have no problem with being sandboxed) then they absolutely should be. It's a major security benefit.

Except that there are whole swaths of tools and applications that cannot be published at all due to limitations of Sandbox, making your computer limited to a whim of someone on the other side of the world.

And those ones you need to install? What is the problem? Are you upset because the app store doesn't solve every problem, just a lot of them?

Having seen the internals of many an application that deals with both "human" and "group" accounts, I'm not surprised that something like this would cause an issue. Unless things are designed from the ground up to support it (which they never are), those types of migrations always have a bunch of edge cases that aren't properly handled. Sure it sucks but the real test of whether Apple gives a rats behind is if they f…

The question is - if it happens, why don't they factcheck the outliers and make sure they don't mess up the developer due to their buggy software.

Because they don't really have an incentive to. People still keep handing over software to their store.
