This would have been a lot more exciting if it were designed to actually be even slightly compatible with grep (or maybe had some core in there that was, while leaving the other UI parts he wants to change on top) and were then approaching GNU and saying "hey, this is something I've been working on: would you consider making grep the first standalone tool to move to Rust, and what would it take from me to make this h…
If neither condition holds, then the use of Rust is almost purely incidental. It isn't even interesting, from that perspective. Far more interesting would be a measure of how safe the Rust code is versus equivalent-results implementations in other languages.

You're assuming way too much bad faith here. The article tries very hard to make a fair comparison, and doesn't throw dirt on grep at any point. It's pretty clear that the intention of the author was to write a search tool with particular characteristics, and it turned out that that choice was faster than grep.
I think you're extrapolating from the name of the crate -- as steve said, the name is not "R.I.P. grep", and the intention was not to replace grep.
Go through the post again with this in mind. Does it sound at all combative to you? It's purely technical, and fairly explains everything.

#55It looks very good and I'd like to try it. However I'm lazy and I don't want to install all the Rust dev environment to compile it. Did anybody build a .deb for Ubuntu 16?
If you don't want to compile it yourself, the blog post has links to binaries. Since they're entirely self-contained, you don't need a full .deb to compile them; just delete the binary when you want to get rid of it.
It works. The binary is 11 MB, or 1.5 MB stripped. ag is 69176 bytes. Shared libraries were a good invention :-) Sooner or later rg will be packaged properly too.

Is there anything about ripgrep that makes its performance uniquely fast? That is, is it not possible to achieve the same speed and correctness of results using, say, C or C++?
