In the end, I see all these apps dying. Even hangouts is crappy. They don't have a native mac client. Hangouts was a decent chat app they had. I wish they promoted hangouts as cross platform and as a competitor to both whatsapp and skype.
The Mac client for Hangouts got a big upgrade. It's not really native, but more like Slack (Electron).

They still have their XMPP as well, but they never enabled SSL so it sends messages in plaintext and won't federate to modern XMPP servers/clients. What a clusterfuck of a company.

No, it doesn't.
Google tore down the federation on purpose, with a configuration change. Rumour has it that it was a spam response.

As much as you would any other company - Apple, for example - unless someone trawls through the source code to verify the claim.

What's the uplink speed on the other end (presumably 4Mbps is downlink)? That would be a more limiting factor in the quality of the video you see on your end. But then I recall we had working video chat a decade ago with only a few hundred Kbps...

No, WebRTC and codecs do support low bitrates. Someone got lazy coding the client.

I think there are other reasons, but I really dislike using my phone number as an ID. Phone numbers are much harder to change , so if some annoying person gets a hold of it suddenly they can harass me across networks. This is a thing that actually happens! Even worse is when you loose your phone. I just lost mine (still hoping some nice Berliner turned it into the lost and found) and I guess I've gone and lost all my whatsapp history + contacts there.
