What happened with Milo is less about him attacking Leslie Jones, and more about his _followers_ attacking Leslie Jones. Milo knows full well that if he identifies someone for his heckling, he'll have thousands of trolls and their sockpuppets do the heavy lifting for him.

To be fair, a lot of web forums have run on free software. Centralization was what happened when usenet was over run with spam. Laziness is a poor explanation given one alternative exists and requires no maintenance, and the other takes a great deal of time, effort, and especially in the past, a lot of money to run.

This is just false. I have no idea where you are getting this idea from or why you are stating such clearly inaccurate claims, but they are false. Take a look at the history of /r/all and find me a single day when what you are claiming is even remotely true: https://web.archive.org/web/*/reddit.com/r/all. Yes, there is plenty of the content you describe on Reddit if you go looking for it, but it is absolutely not the "site's most popular content."

Here's the problem (IMO): Reddit has too many features and too big a userbase to replicate as Reddit itself did a decade ago. voat.co has been in development for years and still lacks crucial systems for things like content moderation, monetization, scaling, etc. Essentially for a coup of Reddit to occur you have to take a large chunk of Reddit at once. Both Twitter's and Reddit's problem is that they are applying their rules very selectively. Twitter, for example, ban political trolls and populists, but tolerate terror organizations and their supporters. Like what the actual fuck...

to be fair twitter probably doesn't want them on the platform but the US government has probably asked them to leave them alone

The problem with that kind of reasoning is now how do you decide if someone is right wing? How far do they have to be for it to be okay? It's similar to the problem welfare faces compared to universal basic income. If you just say harassment is bad in general (or everyone should get the same icnome regardless of their situation) we wouldn't even have this discussion.
