>As long as content is hosted on company-controlled servers where ad revenue is the model for survival, you're going to see slow declines and eventual busts like Digg. That's really not what happened at Digg. The problem at Digg was a structure which rewarded "power users" and allowed third party commercial interests to gain control of the site. It's bad enough that Digg had advertising - eventually we were looking a…

Yes, to say that user generated content is porn and racism, that really says more about the person saying it. (A more real problem is that early adopters of any web community building effort are overwhelmingly just there to self-promote in one form or another.)

Youtube can be a significant revenue steam for the users through so it's not a good example.

Reddit is a content management system for spam and stupidity.

Just like Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. When sites with user generated content grows to big, they seem to degrade to "monkeys with typewriters". The good content is mostly still there, it just drowns in the bad stuff.

That's a lazy meme. If you spend significant time with a site you can see through the superficial qualities and learn what makes it unique.

When the so called anti-fascists use violence against peaceful protesters and against the police who try to stop them, then yes.

"""If fascism could be defeated in debate, I assure you that it would never have happened, neither in Germany, nor in Italy, nor anywhere else. Those who recognised its threat at the time and tried to stop it were, I assume, also called “a mob”. Regrettably too many “fair-minded” people didn’t either try, or want to stop it, and, as I witnessed myself during the war, accommodated themselves when it took over … People…

So what's the solution?

Because attacking people for beliefs you don't like doesn't exactly make things better.

A lot of the people that seem to be trying to attack those they see as facist would be just as bad in the power as those they oppose. Except you know, with different targets.

> The only reason web forums exist is because people are lazy about adopting decentralized Free software Or because that open-source software is user-hostile and has no serious argument for its use for 99% of people. When users don't do something you like, in almost every instance it's your failing rather than theirs.

Have you tried using federated sites like quitter.no? It's pretty much the same UI as Twitter.

Marketing fail. The name of a site actually matters. Who wants to be a quitter?

"right wing" or "far right wing". Remember we're talking about literal neo-nazis here, not just Conservatives.

To clarify the context, are you saying that gamergate members are literal neo-nazis?

I would definitely say that there is a strong overlap between the two groups

I think much of Reddit's problems with its userbase boil down to an early failure to manage expectations. It's pretty clear that the Reddit corporation doesn't want Reddit to be an anything-goes, absolute free speech zone with no moderation or anti-harassment policies -- but that's what the site actually was for many years. Now, when the company cracks down, users think their freedoms are being curtailed. The mistake…

Twitter's problem isn't quite the same as Reddit's. It's because the site is incredibly inconsistent with its moderation. If you run a community, you need consistency. Members need to know where the boundaries are in regards to how you can act and what is/isn't acceptable. Twitter doesn't really do this well. If you agree with the staff political stances, you can basically get away with anything. If you're popular en…

If Twitter gets consistent with moderation, any profits that they could ever have will go puff! It takes real people to do consistent moderation.

I think what happens when we have truly anonymous free speech, on places such as Reddit, Twitter, and 4Chan, shows that we are nowhere as civilized as we like to think we are.

I think this is a mistaken impression. The problem, I think, is that we haven't figured out new norms and boundaries for online socialization, as we have for other forms of communication and other media. One of the things that makes online communication so potent is that it is not just easy but also near instantaneous with a global reach. But we have been slacking on building the tools to manage the problems inherent…

> Going back to the '90s and even the '80s it was common for, say, usenet newsreaders to have tools built in for ignoring posts from people you wanted to ignore, and the modern tools for such things are barely at that level, if they exist at all, despite the problem being even more difficult to tackle.

I was a post-September usenet user, so apparently I never saw the glory days, but what passed for flamewars back then seems pretty tame in comparison to today. And I recall having much better (plonk) tools for ignoring stuff I didn't want to see.

http://archive.is/uOTnv (grabbed latest thing from archive is, so like, 7 hours ago) There is... like, less than 10% matches what you describe and a AmA is in 10th position with near 5000 points

It is always amazing how consistently people will lie about what reddit is "full of" when anyone can just look at the site and see they are lying. Reddit is overflowing with BLM and islamic terrorist apologists, and we're supposed to believe reddit is all nazi KKK grand wizards.

Black Lives Matter is not a terrorist organization, please take your racist opinion back to reddit

> I just checked the data and it is not killing Imgur: Reddit image usage was 18% in the top image subreddits at beginning of June, today it is 25% that seems like a pretty significant rate-of-uptake to me - why would you say it's not killing imgur?

Here's the plot of the Imgur and Reddit pics market share on /r/pics and /r/gifs: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cgoFF6njlyv1W0DQ3IF5... There is growth in Reddit Pics and decline in Imgur, but it'll be a few months before the lines intersect. A cry from the Imgur killer everyone expected.

I think it's that's a very good rate of growth for a new service. The scaling challenges alone are not obvious and slowly taking up market share is the safer thing to do. If I was an investor seeing these growth rates, I'd be really happy as long as it keeps up and only plateaus when the goal is reached.

Why the hell is Reddit trying to make their own content when the entire point of the site is for the users to create the content? Don't make a Reddit podcast, make Reddit a podcast hosting network. Don't make a Reddit video show, make Reddit a video hosting site. Don't make a Reddit magazine, make Reddit a source for anybody to publish their own magazines. Why does Reddit have writers and editors and creative directo…

> Give a cut of advertising revenue to the mods of successful, high quality subs. No, oh no. Why mods? Cuts should go to users posting the content. Maybe make it so that OC is rewarded [more], karma "farming" is discouraged, echo chambers don't become the only places with activity, and make sure that hiveminds do not drown out all other discussion. Otherwise Reddit just becomes the online cousin of mainstream media,…

Mods are one of the reasons why the site is dying. Huge threads and valuable posts are constantly being deleted because a mod sees a few worthless comments and nukes everything instead of letting the community use the built-in vote mechanism to push these posts to the bottom of the site.
