Almost exactly decimation.

Closer to nonation, technically, but decimation is the word everyone already knows.

"decimation" is also the word with meaning. "nonation" is just turning "nineth" into a verb and then somewhat of a gerund, like "ninething". Without the historical context, it has little meaning.

Am I the only one with a sinking, gut instinct, that this is indicative of a deeper problem in the economy? It feels like a crash is lurking... Maybe I'm just paranoid?

interest at zero means that you are stepping on the gas pedal and the car is hardly moving, so of curse a crash is coming, a big one

So Intel is cutting 11% of its workforce, Goldman Sachs just reported a 56% drop in profits, Morgan Stanley had a 50% drop in profits, Netflix missed subscriber growth estimates etc... yet, the Dow just hit a 9-Month high, and the S&P500 is now above 2100. The whole market is overvalued, not just the tech unicorns.

If you pick and choose stocks, you can tell any story you want. Intel cutting its workforce is more of a reflection on the state of the PC market rather than the US economy as a whole. I'm not saying the market is overvalued or not, but this is in no way indicative of that.

If they can't sell computers in the digital age where software has taken over everything, you can think whatever you want but that does reflect poorly on the economy. Yes, many factors are at play. It is still a terrible sign.

That is odd, because they also reported an 18% increase in profits.

quote from zerohedge: Instead of using the same tax rate as a year ago, when it had an effective tax rate of 25.5%, this quarter the tax rate was down 7.1% to just 18.4%. Had INTC used the historical tax rate, it would have, surprise, missed. Worse, INTC just cut its outlook, predicting revenue of $13.5 billion, plus or minus $500 million, for the Q2, about $700MM below consensus estimates.

Does anyone working within Intel know the reasoning ? It seems skylake is doing really well. Is it mostly electrical engineers working on the processors or sales and marketing people ?

Intel finally realized that ARM is dominating growing sectors (mobile and embedded[1]), while they're dominating the shrinking ones (desktop and server). [1] still can't bring myself to say IoT.

embedded makes more sense :)

I'm not sure how much of an effect this would have, but from a consumer's point of view, there isn't as much of a reason to buy a new PC every few years anymore. The laptop I'm using right now was purchased in 2011, and the prices in stores now are very comparable to what I paid back then. I've made up my mind to buy a new one a few times, but then when I go to the store, it just isn't worth it.

That's exactly it. The same performance isn't (that much) cheaper, and it's actually difficult to find any sort of high performance laptop (for cheep). Plus, the last few laptops I've purchased all seem to die JUST after the warranties (extended or otherwise) expire. Are they finally at least putting 1080p+ screens on these as a standard thing, or is everyone still stick on that crummy 1366x768 regression?

Much to my boss' disappointment, it's almost impossible to find a 1366x768 laptop, or more generally, one that isn't 1080p.

Have you been following the current earnings season? We are witnessing horrible earnings while stocks keep going up and up. All the losses in August 2015/February 2016 have virtually disappeared after the oil price recovery.

oil is a leading indicator of demand. The fact that it picked up is a sign that demand picked up. stocks are continuing to rise because investors see the current drop in earnings as a blip, not as a market catastrophe.

News like this out of the blue is strange. I was pretty sure that the post-PC era was a sham. It still is, right?

This isn't at all out of the blue. As the article states, Intel revenues have been declining for over half a decade now. A few years after the first iPhone hit the market.

Are you sure about the revenues going down? According to http://www.statista.com/statistics/263559/intels-net-revenue... revenues seem to have gone up.

How much of your time is now on a mobile that used to be on a desktop? Their core business is drying up.

For me, maybe 30%, mostly because I have a computer in front of me for coding most of the day anyway. For my brother's family it's nearer to 90%. He still has a PC for work, although it is on about a 5-7 year replacement cycle, and they no longer need the more-expensive second PC.
