A little at a time. Force yourself to do something every day, even if it's only 15 minutes of work. Write a blog post, research a technology, test some code, etc. Just do something to move your project forward. Progress is made in little steps. this is probably the right question, I have just made a little calc, that if I dedicated 1 hour a day to my side project from the first day it came up on my mind I 'd have spent 400 hours on it, and it would be probably more than complete!
