The argument for the "show of force" tactic is that a show of force can prevent the use of force because the suspect is too stunned to act.

When you walk into an anonymous message board and the first thing you declare is your gender, you shouldn't be surprised when other people think you are attention whoring. Tits or gtfo is the perfect counter, since you want to a special snowflake, then we will treat you as your polar opposite - a generic bag of skin and meat worth nothing but a masturbation aid. Downvote all you like. The truth hurts doesn't it?

I will reply before your comment disappears into oblivion (which it will and should): No, no, a thousand times no, because there is nothing wrong with being a woman . Everyone's gender, man, woman, or however they see it, is part of what makes them a human being. It makes up a part of your identity whether you're conscious of it or not. Announcing your gender is no more "attention whoring" (itself an awful, loaded ph…

Announcing your gender is no [different ]than announcing that you're a student, that you're a teenager...

But if the very definition of a "user" is around anonymity then by declaring a personal information you kind of are attempting to make the conversation about you (which I presume is contrary to the whole point of 4chan?).

I honestly don't know whether 4chan would pass the acid test of "is declaring gender indeed treated the same as declaring ones shoe size". If it did though (a big if) - I'd have a problem demonizing the behaviour. I guess that's the GP's contention?

So, is it acceptable to have a culture based around attacking (with real hostility) non-conformity to community norms? Where does one draw the line for when you can be mean to people on the internet?

My personal line comes when hostility starts leaking out of your community - but I'm happy to hear the other points of view.

no, you misunderstand. Tits or GTFO is the jerky, but perfectly valid variant of "This community doesn't give half a shit what your gender is".

It's one thing if it just comes up, like someone asks you something male-specific and you reply "actually I don't know, because I'm a girl". It's completely different, and it's the case for which Tits or GTFO is reserved, when someone starts a thread with "Hi guyyyyyys, I'm a GIRL who..." No. I don't care. You can be a green-skinned 6-tittied hermaphrodite prostitute from the Vega cluster and I still won't care. This board is for discussing and we won't let you derail it or beg for special treatment just because you have a vagina. If you want it so much, here's your special treatment: Tits or GTFO.

Like it or not, women often get special treatment online at other forums (and this article itself presents such a case, though a negative one) and some do exploit it (holy shit a person exploits social prejudices, hold the phone). The 4chan userbase (for the most part) has decided they want none of it and unless it's relevant to the discussion, your personal details are unwanted and will garner hostile responses, ranging from "nobody cares", to "not your fucking blog", to "Tits or GTFO".

P.S. Go on /cgl/, a board with a majority female population, and start a thread with "Hey girls, wanna talk to a man?", see how it goes.

we don't see the same level of hatred around people using tripcodes.

SWAT is only called in when there is an imminent threat. The problem is that the swatters can make up whatever story they need to. There's no good way for the SWAT team to actually confirm the story without going in.

When someone says they're robbing a bank, they send in the SWAT team, but the first thing they do is set a perimeter and try to make contact with the people inside. Zero of these incidents that I've read about have tried to make any contact with people inside. They just break down the door and invade the house, guns drawn, smoke grenades in cribs, whatever it takes to make entry. I have no idea why it isn't protocol…

> Zero of these incidents that I've read about have tried to make any contact with people inside

I got swatted a year ago and they setup a perimeter outside, really just eight officers with assault rifles aimed at the front door, and had one knock and yell that it was the police and that I needed to come out immediately. Granted in my case the caller said I had heavy weapons and was planning some kind of mass killing rather than the classic hostage situation so maybe they took a different approach?

Nice straw man. If 4chan is made up of 99% females and I go in there and declare that I am male. I would expect nothing less. The fact is, you think they are being specialed out because they are women, no, they are being attacked by trying curry favours because they are different. They are not being attacked for being different, they are attacked for exploiting their differences. It is the same with people who use tr…

Psst. This is the "usual" anonymous 4chan account, made after anonymous was overtaken by a cumguzzling shitstain and had its password changed. Use this, don't suffer bad karma.

I'm wondering if a reliable caller ID that gives a rough geographical source of the call would prevent most swatting. A supposedly local emergency call that actually comes from a different country should be considered suspicious. Seems like there are some loopholes to be closed?

The whole thing smells like a system that can't deal with bogus inputs. It's understandable that police want to prepare for the worst, but surely it's a "trust but verify" kind of situation. A swat team that charges in, guns drawn, even without any sign of a threat seems like a fire department that turns on the hoses before they've seen smoke or flame.

Then of course, after the police work out a response plan that can cope with bad inputs, step 2 is they need to tell everyone about it. The expectation that cops will point ten guns at anyone you ask them to is the reason swatting is a thing at all.

It seems to me that the fault lies entirely with the state. If it is violently intruding people's homes on the basis of this sort of report - which ends up being false - then obviously it needs to change the nature of what evidence can be regarded as sufficient cause to do this. After all, say-so alone isn't supposed to be sufficient evidence to conduct a search. From the 4th amendment: > The right of the people to b…

There's no reason SWAT teams couldn't follow one set of procedures until there's secondary confirmation of a threat, and a different set of procedures from then on. Come to that, it seems crazy not to.
