Well, given that the YC official stance on founders is that they should 'be a little naughty' and that they expect founds to not care 'about observing proprieties', I am not surprised that the founders would be a little shady when things aren't going well. http://www.paulgraham.com/founders.html

Domain registrars often include a year of "whoisguard" (namecheap's brand for it) or similar with new domain registrations. I'm never too surprised by that until it's been over a year. Or is Domains By Proxy a more significant anonymity system?
