It's a constant velocity joint. Like the one that lets you turn the wheel on your front wheel drive car.

High intersection angle CV joints. Similar in purpose to the joints between the driven wheels and power plant (transmission/transaxle/rear diff/whatever) in your car, but Persian joints can tolerate much steeper angles.

#9For those interested in these kind of mechanical things, Dover has republished some 19th and early 20th century public domain books that collected together mechanical movements. Some examples:

#10Very cool. I have been building animatronics and mechanisms for years until the last 5 years or so. Typically I relied on old classics of mechanisms, and then I would model it in Inventor (now Fusion 360 or FreeCAD lately), to see how it worked. These are brilliant and so numerous! My hat off to Prof. Nguyễn!
