Even diffusion isn't some magical force guiding chemicals through the medium. It's just random movement that statistically results in the chemical being spread out. #534I understand the physical properties of the coin make it so it is an independent event but if I were to run the experiment multiple times the number of times it would be heads after 5 heads would not be an even probability, it would be unlikely since 6 heads in a row is a rare event.

#535Fourier Transforms. I'd wish I had a intuitive understanding of how they work. Until then I'm stuck with just believing that the magic works out.
The best way to understand the Fourier transformations is to think of them as change-of-basis operations, like we do in linear algebra. Specifically a change from the "time basis" (normal functions) to the "frequency basis" (consisting of a family of orthonormal functions). The universe is actually made of quantized fields. Both particles and waves are imprecise models/approximations. There's no such thing as a particle, instead there are just excitations of this field which we cannot measure with complete accuracy.

Many problems require lots of huge matrix multiplications—think simulations of physical systems, i.e. weather systems or molecular interactions, or numerical optimization.
Note that matrix multiplication takes O(n^2) time with a quantum computer, but O(n^2.807) time on a classical computer.

But in a nutshell, the animations are heavily idealized, showing the process when it succeeds, slowing it way, way down, and totally ignoring 90% of the other nearby material so you can see what's going on. Then you remember that you have just a bajillion of cells within you, all containing this incredibly complex machinery and... it's really kindof humbling just how little we actually know about any of it. Not to discredit the biologists and scientists for whom this is their life's work; we've made incredible amounts of progress over the last century. It's just... we're peeking at molecular machinery that is so very small, and moves so quickly that it's nigh impossible to observe in realtime.
