My suggestion is not to do it. You will want to get back to IT industry, but it will be rather hard to do if you don't spend tons of spare time acquiring needed knowledge and skill…

And I use different OSes – Mac OS X, Windows 7 and XP, sometimes different git versions. And still no problems.

I do this for several years with lots of repos. Not a single problem ever.
