We are currently developing my startup and it's almost done. We are bootstrapping at the moment, so we would like to keep the cost down as much as we can. We are located in California, and I have been reading DBA vs LLC.

Obviously LLC would protect you more, but I think it costs more to file LLC? While DBA costs way less, but it is basically just a DBA without any protection.

I am thinking of doing DBA first just to see if there is any traction for the startup, then if it has some traction, then I move to LLC. I intend to do it myself vs a lawyer for a DBA

Is this a smart move? Should we just go LLC right away? What is the lawyer cost to file LLC ?

Thank you for the advise.
